Bob loved to garden, cut grass, spend time with his grandchildren and talk about his time in the service. He was a successful businessman and founded Amko Fence in Gonzales in 1976 and retired in 2001. He was actively involved in the community, serving on the Ascension Parish Library Board for 25 years, as President of the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and as a parishioner of St. Theresa.
He graduated from Sunset High in 1951 and from USL with a degree in Business in 1961, before serving in the Air Force from 1954-57, based in Japan. He later taught Morse code at Keesler Air Force base. Bob was always eager to speak Cajun French with anyone and was proud of it being his first language. He traveled all over the world, making friends along the way: sharing dairy stories with farmers in Ireland, joking with bartenders in Cajun French in Paris and Brussels, and eating his favorite “yaki-meche” in Tokyo, where the “soft rain” reminded him of his years spent there in the service. His beloved wife, Virginia, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews were the beneficiaries of his gentle soul, humor and thoughtful wisdom.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 62 years, Virginia Lavigne Meche; three daughters, Sondra Ulin, Robin Kube and Monique Meche; one son, Timothy Meche and seven grandchildren: Lauren and Lindsey Ulin, Rhone and Jude Meche, Claire and Brandon Johnson and Lucas Kube. Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and David Meche; sisters, Amy Mire, Clemmie Meche, Theresa Brown, Genevieve Lastrapes, and son-in-law, David Ulin. Visitation will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Gonzales, on Saturday, April 30th from 8:30-10:30am with mass at 10:30am, conducted by Father Eric Gyan. Burial to follow at Hope Haven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Theresa Catholic Church in Gonzales.
Dad and PawPaw: We will miss your presence, treasure your memory and love you always and forever.
