Clara Ann Womack deVeer, a lifelong resident of Gonzales, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 17, 2026. She was born on May 28, 1944, and had been the last surviving daughter of the late Clarence Floyd and Gladys (Broussard) Womack.
Clara grew up attending the Gonzales schools, but her high school sweetheart was from the rival Dutchtown school. She married Robert “Bobby” deVeer on June 22, 1961, and they shared almost 60 years together before he passed away on December 31, 2020.
Clara was a homemaker and a mother, both jobs she excelled in. She was room mom, field trip chaperone and afterschool chauffeur; she was the wrangler of three loud kids on summer break while dad tried to sleep after nightshift; she was the one who did without so her family could have whatever they needed. When she was promoted to mother-in-law, Maw Maw and then great-Maw Maw, she continued to dedicate her life to her growing family.
Some of the things Clara enjoyed were quilting, cross stitching and crafting with her (late) sisters and her daughter and daughters-in-law. She was involved in several sewing groups, including The Circle of Friends, Thread Benders, The River City Quilt Guild and Bobbie’s Retreat.
But what she enjoyed most were her “blessings:” her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved watching them grow and listening to them tell stories and laugh. Her favorite thing was to have everyone together in her “nest.” Her family was so important to her and, right up to the end, she was still trying to take care of everyone. Some of her last words were to tell her grandchildren to “be careful” as they were leaving after visiting her.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bobby deVeer; her three sisters, Jeanne Aucoin, Barbara “Bobbie” Alleman and Edith Linda Womack; and a brother, Floyd “Sonny” Womack.
She is survived by her three children, Robert deVeer Jr (Lori Goodson), Vicki Frick (Paul), and Jeffery deVeer (Stacy Rogers); her seven grandchildren, Colby deVeer (Britney Blanchard), Erica deVeer (Lindsey Sheppard), Joshua Frick (Alanna Jeffcoat), Nicholas deVeer (Madison Rankin), Juniper Frick (Laura Wakelin), Brooke Babin (Jake) and Jacob Frick King (Charlie); and five great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Harper, Hunter, Rylee and Cassidy. Clara is also survived by her two youngest brothers, James “Jimmy” Womack (Peggy Moran) and Archie Womack (Diane Hughes), plus cousins and in-laws who were like siblings in every way but on paper. She was also a “second Mama” to so many nieces and nephews and became “Maw Maw Clara” to almost everyone who walked through the door. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Womack Family Cemetery, on Womack Lane off Hwy 621 in Gonzales. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Gentiva Hospice Care.
