

Herbert Joseph Hoover, Jr. , a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who many in town relied on at any given time and considered a friend. He was born in New Orleans on September 2, 1943, and passed away August 22, 2018, at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. Herbert was 74 and a resident of Whitehall, Louisiana. Herbert was a man with many hats. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, a mechanic, a carpenter, and the former owner of Hoover’s grocery. Recently, he retired from the Livingston Parish School System where he drove a school bus for many of the parish schools, including Maurepas. Having a special love for cattle, he was a member of the Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association who enjoyed being with his family and especially his 5 grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Berthelot Hoover; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Troy Gautreau; son, Herbert Joseph Hoover III; sisters Kay and husband Roland Robert, Jr. , Mary Leader, Beatrice “Bee” and husband Joe Breaux, David Hoover, Sr. , and wife Cindy; 5 grandchildren, Hannah Katherine Gautreau, Marley Katherine Hoover, Emma Claire Gautreau, Sophie Anne Hoover, and Jackson Joseph Hoover.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Joseph Hoover, Sr. , and Mary Odelia Berthelot Hoover, and brother-in-law, Barton Joseph Leader, Sr.
Visitation will be at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Whitehall on Saturday, August 25, 2018, from 10:30 A.M. until Mass of Christian burial at 2:00 P.M., celebrant Rev. Jason Palermo. Interment will follow at Whitehall Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roland J. Robert III, Carl Leader, Kent Leader, Kevin Gautreau, David Hoover, Jr. , and Danny Berthelot.
