Kern James Gautreau, a lifelong resident and native of Gonzales, passed away peacefully at his home on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family. Kern proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he enjoyed a long career at Borden Chemical before retiring. A man of many passions, Kern had a deep love for fishing—spending countless joyful days on the water, always ready to compete for who would buy the ice cream on the way home. A dedicated pecan grower, Kern received training at Texas A&M in pecan tree growth and reproduction. His expertise earned him awards and recognition, and many local pecan trees today still bear the mark of his careful grafting. He was also a skilled cook, known far and wide for making the best pot of jambalaya around. Kern loved his garden and took great pride in his yard, often spending time outdoors tending to both. He was a devoted LSU sports fan and a proud supporter of President Donald Trump. Kern was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Iris “Jeanie” Duplessis Gautreau; his parents, Allie “Blue” and Vivian Gautreau; his son-in-law, Logan Skaggs; his sisters, Verla Lambert and Rita Gautreaux; and his brothers, Felton “Flute,” Edward “Tut,” and John “Coonie” Gautreau. He is survived by his children: Rafe (Shannon) Gautreau, Blake (Rachel) Gautreau, Cole (Jennifer) Gautreau, and Nicol Skaggs; his cherished grandchildren: Brynnen (Peyton) Robinson, Landrey Gautreau, McKenna Gautreau, Allie Gautreau, Reece Gautreau, Tyler Comeaux, Alex Duplessis, Pyke Gautreau, Kyler Skaggs, Remi Gautreau, and Rylan Skaggs; and by his sister, Jeanie Lambert, and brother, Barney Gautreau. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Nurse Cody Terrell with Southern Grace Hospice and the staff of Our Lady of the Lake for their compassionate care. Family and friends are invited to attend visitation at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Hope Haven Cemetery.
