

"Bully" Mayers passed into eternal life on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve. He was a lifelong resident of Lake and Galvez and had just celebrated his 90th birthday on March 19, 2013. He was retired with 31 years of service at Burnside Terminal as a crane and locomotive operator. He served with the 757th Railroad Battalion U.S. Army in WW II. He was a lifetime honorary member of Operating Engineers local 406, also a member of American Legion Post 81 of Gonzales, member of New River Baptist Church and New River Lodge 402 Order of Masons and Order of Eastern Star Lodge 163. Visiting will be at Faithful United Methodist Church, St. Amant on Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 10 am until funeral services at 2 pm. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. He is survived by his two daughters and sons in law, Jeannette Dabbs and husband, Joe of Central and Patricia Cannon and husband, TC of Galvez; four grandchildren, Stacey Dabbs Bragg, Darryl Dabbs, Tonya Cannon Brown and Stephen Cannon; five great grandchildren, Dylan and Dawson Dabbs, Jace Bragg, Beau and Brylee Brown; a brother, Luther "Pewee" Mayers; and a sister, Lenora "Kitty" Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Bernice Keller Mayers; parents, Lee Honest "Pa Jim" Mayers and Ethel "Ma Jim" Yard Mayers; two brothers, Lloyd "Syrup" and Linden "Crop" Mayers; two sisters, Laura Roussell and Lillian Pendarvis. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great grandsons. His great granddaughter will serve as honorary pallbearer. The family would like to thank the staff of the SELWVH for their care and support during the last five years. Special thanks to Laine and the Serenity Hospice staff for their sincere care and support during his last days. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SELWVH Activities Fund, 4080 W Airline Hwy, Reserve, LA 70084.
