Born on February 9, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, Karen was the daughter of Howard Daniel Martin and Clara F. Martin (born Neff). She graduated from Fairview High School in 1964 and went on to study to become an X-ray technician.
On May 14, 1967, Karen married Jerry Johnson at Camp Barakel in Fairview, Michigan—a place that held deep meaning to her from her youth. Their nearly 58-year marriage was rooted in faith, mutual devotion, and a shared love for family.
After their marriage, Karen and Jerry were blessed with three sons. While raising their young boys, Karen returned to school and earned her Registered Nursing Certificate from Mid Michigan Community College—an inspiring accomplishment that reflected her perseverance, intelligence, and caring spirit. She worked for many years as a nurse and discharge planner at Clare Hospital, where her compassion, wisdom, and attention to detail made a lasting impact on patients and families alike. She eventually retired from Clare Hospital, closing a beautiful chapter of dedicated service in healthcare.
Karen was known for her unwavering love for Jesus, her kindness to all, and her deep and joyful connection with her family. She loved cooking and canning, often filling the pantry with homemade goods to provide for those she loved. She was also a proud University of Michigan sports fan who cheered enthusiastically for her Wolverines.
Karen’s compassionate heart led her to start and lead an Alzheimer’s Support Group, offering faith-filled encouragement and understanding to families navigating difficult seasons of caregiving.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Jerry Johnson; sons Greg (Laurie) Johnson, Rob (Paula) Johnson, and Jim (Kylee) Johnson; grandchildren Noah (Molly) Johnson, Chase Johnson, Levi Johnson, Vincent Johnson, Ian Johnson, and Braden Johnson; and her brother, Jerry Martin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Clara Martin, and by her precious grandchildren, Chloe and Graeme Johnson.
