Intelligent and friendly, Kay loved cats, reading, gardening and making jewelry. She was talkative and creative, with a million ideas that she organized on endless Post-It notes. She specialized in gifted education and co-founded the Tennessee Association for the Gifted, then taught middle school computer classes and became an expert grant writer. She was awarded a Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, among many prestigious grants, and was a Metro Teacher of the Year finalist.
Kay earned a master's degree from Murray State University while raising three daughters. As a young mother she wrote freelance articles, raised Siamese cats and Weimaraners, sewed, knitted and created astrological charts. In retirement she enjoyed lapidary and beading.
A daughter of A.C. and Neva (Givens) Orange of Old Hickory, Kay is also preceded in death by her younger sister who died in a plane crash during the fall of Saigon. She is survived by her daughters, Catina (Curtis) Coleman of Yukon, Okla., Kayne (Joe) Rogers of Nashville and Layne (Sean) Keene of Hendersonville, as well as grandchildren Cianna Coleman, Connor Coleman and Jayne Keene.
