Lossie Myrl Staples Midgett, daughter of the late William David Staples and Hallie Smith Staples, was born on March 15, 1922 in Butler Co., KY. She died Friday, May 1, 2015 in Bellevue, TN. She was married to her best friend and high school sweetheart, Hugh Preston Midgett, in Marianna, Florida on March 25, 1943. They were inseparable until his death on September 6, 2008. Along the way, they raised 2 children and shared their love of people. With unwavering commitment, they laughed through the good times and leaned on each other through more challenging days, setting a fine example of genuine love.
To your children, you provided us with the perfect combination of leadership, love, encouragement and acceptance. You respected our independence and unique perspectives and encouraged us to pursue our own dreams. Lossie perfected her hand at sewing early in her life and regularly made clothing for her children, as well as nieces, nephews and neighborhood children. In addition to caring for their temporal needs, she also saw to her family's spiritual needs. Lossie was a woman of great faith and set a divine example of Christianity through her love and devotion to God. She was the cornerstone of our family and a woman of strength and humility. She left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.
She is survived by one son, Carl Houston Midgett and his wife Barbara; one daughter, Kay Lynn Sheppard and her husband Glenn; grandchildren, Glenda Kay Sheppard, and Michelle Midgett Rigsby and her husband Jackie; great-grandchildren, Brittany Johnson, Alyssa Carr, Houston Rigsby and Ellie Rigsby; great-great-grandchildren, Ava Grace Jones, Christopher Todd Jones, Lennon Abel Carr & Joplin Lucille Carr. She was preceded in death by her baby son, Joe Preston Midgett; her grandson, Christopher Boyd Sheppard, and four siblings, James Edward Staples, John David Staples, Lee Watson Staples, and Norma Gayle Vinson.
An unknown poet from years ago wrote: "God gave us memories so that we would have roses in the winter". Those very words remind us that this family's rose gardens will be in full bloom at all times because of the precious memories that even death cannot take away. These memories are God's special way of giving us something to brighten our day, to lift us up when we are down and to reassure us that God is near at all times for His children. Treasure these thoughts and allow them to speak even in the physical absence of that loved one or friend. It is how even in the midst of death, our special friendships never end for they are really present in our mind and hearts for years to come. Lossie's many friends will remember her as the kindest of souls, a thoughtful, generous woman who loved without judgment and whose loyalty and compassion were constants.
The family will gather with friends for a time of remembrance and visitation at Forest Lawn Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 10 a.m. at the funeral home on Monday, May 4, 2015. The eulogy will be given by Rev. Gilbert Jones. Interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to your favorite charity.
