Phil is survived by his loving bride of 44 years Lynn, four children Teddy, Patrick, Tim (Kim) and Debbie (Clint). 12 Grandkids Portia, Delorean, Ben (Cassie), Chris, Kory (Ashley), Keith, Chelsea, Brandon, Kaylee, Zoe, Brylee and Abbi. 4 great grand kids Declan, Wes, Emmett and Tricia and two on the way and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Carson & Goldna Gibbs, two sisters Jean Helton and Pat Smith and one son Freddie Gibbs.
Dad was born on 6/21/1938 in Old Hickory Tn. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Army (yep, he fibbed but he did get this fixed later), where he proudly served 20 years before retiring. Dad was never one to brag, but he had an accomplished military career earning many medals. Including a Purple Heart, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commandant Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Drill Sergeant Badge, 4 Service Stripes and served 3 tours in Vietnam. He was a light weapons infantryman, Armour specialist and completed the Military Police Academy, NCO Academy and Drill Sergeant training finally retiring with an E7 ranking. What does one do after retiring?? Go back to work of course. Dad worked for the Hendersonville Water District where he retired after 20 years of service as the Superintendent.
Dad was a one of a kind man as anyone who knew him, knows that his family was important to him. Dad was the "head of the family" and with pride took this role seriously. He helped anyone who needed it, whether it was to lend a helping hand, a place to stay, a sympathetic and wise ear for advice (he was an excellent listener) or helping anyone out financially. He was the go to man and was there for everyone without question.
We will be holding a Celebration of Life (Dad always loved a good party) at a later date and will let everyone know as soon as possible.
In lieu of flowers, we the family request donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Phil Gibbs memory.
~~To know him was to love him and he will be missed~~
