January 15, 1958 - February 26, 2026
Michael Joe McMinn, 68, of Goodyear, Arizona, passed away peacefully at his home on February 26, 2026. A devoted husband, father, brother, and "true-blue" friend, Mike lived a life defined by generosity, humor, and an unwavering loyalty to his family.
Born on January 15, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, Mike was the eldest child of the late Joe Mac and Doris Dowell McMinn. Growing up within walking distance of Wrigley Field, he developed a lifelong passion (and occasional obsession) for the Chicago Cubs. In 1971, at age 13, he moved with his family to Martin, Tennessee, where he graduated from Westview High School in 1976.
Shortly after graduation, Mike entered the United States Air Force, completing basic training at Lackland AFB and tech school in Biloxi, MS. His first assignment took him to Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana, where he served with the 341st Civil Engineering Squadron. It was there, on a blizzardy February night in 1977, that he met the love of his life, Sue Lasher. The two later eloped, beginning a 49-year adventure.
His military career and life with Sue took him across the globe and the country.
Following his time in Montana, assignments and service took the family to RAF Mildenhall in England, followed by assignments in Spokane, Vancouver, and Steilacoom, Washington.
After being discharged from the Air Force in 1982, Mike joined the Washington Army National Guard in 1983, becoming a full-time recruiter in 1985. Based out of Camp Murray, he rose through the ranks with persistence and excellence, earning the Chief's
50 Award (top recruiter in the state), multiple times. He ultimately retired in October
2010 as Sergeant Major, Recruiting Command
Mike's greatest joy was his family. He and Sue welcomed their only child, Zackary Joe, in 1993. Mike was the kind of man who would "give you the shirt off his back," remembered always for his easy laugh and big heart. He found happiness being out on the water in his boat, playing golf, talking with people and cheering for his Cubs.
He is survived by the love of his life, Sue Lasher McMinn; his treasured son, Zackary Joe McMinn of Goodyear, AZ; his sisters, Janet (Donnie) Jones of Martin, TN, Cindy (Dennis) Cooper of Dresden, TN, and Vicki (Todd) Moss of Martin, TN; his brother, Jeffrey (Peggy Sue) McMinn of Union City, TN; his best friend, Rob Fletcher of Washington; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Bradley Jones.
Mike lived a full, though far too short, life. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
