Born in Vietnam, Thien lived a life defined by courage, resilience, and unwavering devotion to his family. As a young man, he served during the Vietnam War. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, he was sent to a re-education camp—an experience that profoundly shaped his life and strengthened his resolve.
In pursuit of a better future for his wife and children, Thien made the life-altering decision to escape Vietnam by boat, risking his life for the chance at freedom and opportunity. He left behind everything he knew—not for himself, but so his family could have stability, safety, and hope. Every hardship he endured and every long day he worked thereafter were acts of love.
Thien was a straight shooter who called it like it was—no sugarcoating, no pretense. His honesty was inseparable from his integrity. If there was one thing he truly loved, it was food. Sharing meals, lingering at the table, and laughing over good drinks brought him genuine joy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cam Nhung Lam; four children, Tu (Tuan) To, Tina (Huy) Tran, Tung To, and Tiffany (Lee) To; and seven grandchildren: Ryan and Emily Nguyen; Alina, Aiden, Aaron (deceased), and Nathan Tran; and Kayden and Rylan Xiong.
He risked everything so his family could have a better life. The sacrifices he made became the foundation beneath our feet. We will carry him with us always—in the way we care for one another, in the way we gather at the table, and in the honesty with which we face the world.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public viewing. A small, private gathering will be held for family and close friends, followed by cremation on Saturday, February 21, at 10 AM at Phoenix Crematory.
In lieu of flowers or donations, please celebrate Thien by spending time with your loved ones over a meal—share food, speak honestly, and hold one another close.
