It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Daniel "Dan" McLean on September 13, 2024, in Winter Garden, Florida, at the age of 88. Dan was born on November 4th, 1935, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to the late Muriel (Pfeiffer) McLean and Charles Norman McLean. He graduated from Sayreville High School in 1953 and subsequently was drafted into the United States Army in 1958 where he served as a radio operator for Combat Support in Nuremberg, Germany. Upon returning to the United States, Dan pursued a college degree in Business at night school from Rutgers University, graduating on the Dean’s List. He achieved this while working full-time and raising his young family, a testament to his dedication and perseverance. Dan's hard work and determination were evident throughout his life and his career as a Real Estate and Corporate Facilities Director.
Dan was a man of great knowledge, especially when it came to fixing things and understanding how things worked. His daughter fondly recalls asking him questions as a teenager, to which he once replied, "Do you think I know everything?" Her response was, "Yes, I do!" Dan was a source of knowledge for anyone with an inquiring mind. He had a particular love for his garage and his tools, enough to outfit a repair shop.
Dan embraced his retirement years with enthusiasm, taking full advantage of every moment. He loved to hike with his hiking club, cycle with his cycling club several times a week—continuing even into his early 80s—and was a regular participant in pool tournaments at his neighborhood community center. He was also active in the Woodchippers club, Computer club, and he enjoyed hosting many gatherings for friends with his wife Patricia. Together, they traveled across the United States in their RV, visiting every state and making countless memories.
A friend once described Dan as "one of the truly good guys," and that he was. Dan touched many hearts with his gentle and kind nature and was always someone you could count on. Although they left behind dear friends and neighbors in Henderson to be closer to family in Winter Garden, Dan quickly made new friends in Florida, despite only being there for a short eight months. Dan leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and an indomitable spirit. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dan is survived by Patricia, his beloved wife of 64 years. He is also survived by his daughters, Allison Freeze and her husband Tim; Lisa Sahn and her husband David; as well as his cherished grandchildren; Chandler, Harrison, Alexander, Lily, and Emma.
A service will be held for the family on October 7th at the Cape Canaveral National Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Friends and family are encouraged to share memories and warm wishes online.
