When we visited Grandma, she always had two questions for me: "How are you? Have you eaten?" In our family, food has always been the way we communicate. Grandma, thank you for your generosity, your kindness, and your easy acceptance. You live on not only through our memories and stories but also through your recipes, which will continue to bring us together and let us show our love for each other. I love you, Grandma, and I miss you.

Hi Ahma,

I have so many special memories of you that I will always keep in my heart. I remember how you gave me your sewing thread to braid into bracelets and how you sat on the sofa, patiently teaching me how to crochet even though we could not use the same language to communicate. I remember the precious bento boxes you would make for us to take to the beach and the fish we brought home to share. I remember your quiet laughter at our family parties and the smell of happiness from the kitchen. There is so much I could never say, but the beautiful memories of such simple times are my reminder that I have always known how lucky I was to have been able to grow up in the comfort of your love and kindness. I will treasure all the memories of our time together. I miss you so much and I send you all my love.

My grandfather was the first man in our family who did not become a farmer. He ran a successful lumber business in the suburb of Lo-Tung, Taiwan.  We grew up living under the roof of a huge two-story house with my uncle and one of my aunt's family members.  As crowded yet loving our family atmosphere was, the family dynamics sometimes could be pretty delicate. Mother always demanded that we be respectful of adults. She insisted that children need to act like children and never allowed us to lie. 

She enjoyed cooking for others. Her spring rolls and sticky rice are unrivaled. As good of a cook my elder sister, Chin-Hwa, is, she admits that she cannot duplicate the taste of Mom's ginger-wine-chicken.

Besides cooking, she enjoyed sleeping. She always took an afternoon nap and had to be in bed by 9 pm.  Rarely anything could be important enough to interrupt her sleeping schedule. This might have been her secret to having such a long and fulfilling life.

She had deep roots in Chinese religion and could be obstinate about it. But when my younger sister J.J., a dedicated Christian, taught her the stories of The Bible and how to pray to God, she enjoyed doing it.  I asked her whether she felt any conflict in worshiping another god. Don't worry about it! More gods, more blessings! was her typical wise and clever answer.
She was a person of few words but could crack a good joke on occasion. She was a woman who enjoyed the simple things in life and always looked at things from the bright side. She was loved by all who knew her.

Mom!  Since you've left us, I have been having your voices and words echo in my ears and images of your kind face lingering in my dreams. I miss you terribly.

These last few years have been very special to me because I have had the joy of reconnecting with my Ah-Ma.  I always felt loved and accepted for who I am.  Ah-Ma never said an unkind word about anyone and I so appreciate how she treated everyone around her.  Although she was a woman with few words, her beautiful, gentle soul spoke volumes. I will miss her dearly.
