I am sadden to hear that Chris passed away in 2021. I had no idea. I will always remember Chris as a kind, welcoming and jovial man. Chris always had a smile on his face. I met Chris at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, FL. I remember the fun we all had after school and  Homecoming. After graduation we didn't  see each other until we both returned home from college. I met Amy and they both met my husband Phil. Shortly after that, my hsband and I moved away. We kept in touch a few times but time passed and we lost touch. I am thankful I was able to see and talk to Chris in December of 2020, when his dauaghter graduated from GA Tech. It was a very nice visit and he spoke so lovely of his daughters Hannah and Sarah. He was so proud of them and looking forward to their future. Chris Shafer, you will be greatly missed by all who know you. Rest in peace my dear friend.

My heart breaks for your family. Many years have passed, but I have so many great memories of my time spent with the Schafer clan growing up as Kim’s BFF…Chris and Dave always put up with our shenanigans. I remember Chris as a smart, kind and funny guy and after watching the service it seems like the world didn’t change him. I’m sad I didn’t get a chance to know ‘grown-up’ Chris. We were shocked to hear the news of Chris’ passing.  Gentle giant are the words that perfectly describe this kind, caring, intelligent man.  We will miss cooking special meals together with family and friends. Love and hugs to his family.    May his memory be for a blessing. 

When Chris Schafer entered the room his big smile and the brightness that he carried entered with him. He was a gentleman, a gentle man, a loving father and a dear friend. It’s hard to accept that this sweet kind soul is no longer here with us. May his memory be a blessing!

Part 2 - I believe one of the great catalysts for his professional abilities was the trust and belief that his mom had in him as an architect.  Not many people would trust a new graduate with the remodel / redesign of their personal home.  Chris’ mom apparently had no reservations, and that trust resulted in a fairly large project that Chris designed.  I believe this project was the basis for his confidence in his architectural abstracts / ideas to become realized / built projects.  I am happy that Chris had a productive career with so many happy clients and completed projects.  His mark on the world will be partly the great buildings he designed.  The dedication Chris had to architecture is truly impressive.  
The other area that Chris will have a lasting impact through is that of his kids.  Hannah and Sarah are both excellent people with bright futures.  I am certain that the life lessons Chris gave them will help them navigate and succeed in both business and life.  Our families have spent a fair amount of time together, much of it during weddings, baptisms, bat mitzvahs, vacations and holidays.  Around 2009 we spent Thanksgiving together in Andrews, NC.  I got up early on Thanksgiving day at around 7:00 only to find Chris was already making about 6 different things in the kitchen.  Just like his architectural work, his cooking was exceptional.  
Chris made his mark in work and in life through an innate ability and great effort.  I don’t normally get sad (even when I am supposed to), but I miss my friend terribly, and wish I had more time to spend with him.  I have made friends throughout my lifetime, but like everything else I know about Chris, his friendship was exceptional. Goodbye dear friend.


‘Hey, I am Chris.’  Those were the first words Chris ever said to me.
It was an unceremonious start to a lifelong friendship.
I met Chris my freshman year of college in 1985.  After a few conversations I could tell that Chris was an exceptionally intelligent person.  His quick wit, and dry sense of humor were immediately apparent, and appreciated.  One quick example I can remember was during the first semester of Design Chris sat near me and always had the most impressive, impactful drawings.  The punch in his linework was unmatched.  I asked how he got such great, bold linework, and he said something like ‘Try this F lead instead of that 6H’.  He said it in a way that was instructional, but also like an Italian slap to the head ‘Duh, don’t use the hardest lead available to make dark lines’.  
We ended up sharing studio space for about half of the semesters throughout our time at Miami.  Chris was always fun and thoughtful.  We shared lots of views about the world around us, but it was pretty clear that Chris was the intellectual person in our friendship.  The studio was almost like a shared home.  We built bunks, lighting contraptions, cooking setups, and other modifications to make the space suitable for use 24/7.  I was happy to spend the endless hours in the design studio to work on my projects, but also to learn from our discussions about our projects.
During that time in college we had tons of fun.  I recall taking many day trips in his giant 75 Buick convertible up to Daytona Beach, then to his mom’s for a spaghetti dinner, then to the movies or bowling, then back to Miami for a fun 24 hour escape from the pressures of school.  We also went to see Haley’s comet in that same giant car on the night that was supposed to be the optimal viewing evening.  We got to Key Largo and looked and looked, and finally someone saw the comet.  It looked like a star got smudged by a Q-tip or something.

Chris, my brother that I have known for 11 great years. We have shared some great times together with your family and with mine.  We have both talked out some difficult time together. You were always there to talk to. You could always get me to laugh. You told me a few times… you worry less about Kim, your sister, with me being in the picture. I want you to Rest In Peace, knowing , I will watch over the rest of the family in the best Way I can. You loved the family. Family to you was, anyone you met along the way.

I have many  memories of sharing Thanksgiving with Chris and the Schafers, especially our family trip to NY for the parade. Chris was an amazing chef and had great passion for it.  More recently Chris and I would reach out to each other, especially around sports. Chris was a good friend and was always interested in the details of our lives. We had great talks. He had passion for his work and was very proud to share his designs, even when they are hard to follow. Most importantly Chris loved his family with his huge heart, especially his two girls. 

I have fond memories of Chris, a big , gentle man. May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.  z”l

Chris we first came to know you as “Linda’s son.” Every interaction with you was fun, and an adventure! Then recently we got some one on one time with you. We admired your love, and appreciation for your family. You shined extra bright when you talked about them. It was a treat to witness your talent, and imagination first hand. We are so grateful for all of your ideas, insight, and passion to help us. While we are sad not to finish our journey with you we know your gifts will live on with us, and others. You were an architect of beautiful relationships with your family, friends, work, and anyone you came in contact with. We are grateful for the opportunity to know you. Rest in peace.

I’ve recently had the good fortune of getting to know Chris much better.  Being a close family friend, he has been my “foursome” date on many dinner  occasions, whether he liked it or not ;)  He has always been so kind, thoughtful and complementary and such a pleasure to be with.  He has a great smile and a smooth, velvety voice that I will miss listening to.  I have witnessed Chris as such a beloved, caring son, brother and dad.  He will be deeply missed…Rest in Peace Dear Friend. 

Uncle Chris, you were always the life of the party. You are so loved and missed. We loved hearing all those stories about your funny youth  with our mom and wish to have you back to tell us funny ones about her. We love and miss you so much. Thank you for being a great Uncle to us and a wonderful brother to our mom.
