Dan Thomas Moore was born on September 5, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the second of four boys born to James and Doris Moore. Dan spent his childhood in Indiana. Upon graduation from high school in 1960, Dan enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Army for three years and was stationed in Colorado. After he got out of the Army, Dan worked for Butler Manufacturing, a job which brought him to Orlando. Once he got to Orlando in 1970, he completed his associate’s degree. After receiving this degree in 1974, Dan went to work for Mid-Florida Technical Institute. He continued night classes and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1979 from Florida Southern College. He held two different positions with Mid-Florida Tech. He began as the Director of Placement and Public Relations and retired in 2003 as the Dean of Business Affairs.
Dan had a servant heart. He served as an extraordinary minister for St. Charles Catholic Church, a position which took him to nursing homes to spend time and bring comfort to the people there. He loved helping people, as evidenced by his work with the Sky King Youth Ranch. He helped the boys work the horses, and he even fostered two boys from the ranch.
While his work was very important to him, Dan really loved spending time with his family. When Dan was not working, he enjoyed deer hunting, a hobby he picked up from his father-in-law. He was a proud founding member of the Florida Hound Hunters Association. Despite Dan’s height of 6’7”, he was given the nickname “Shortlegs” as his hunting handle. Another hobby of Dan’s was going to yard sales and finding a good deal. This led to a passion for antiques. He started going to antique auctions and started an antique business called Moore Memories. Dan also loved music, especially playing the guitar and singing.
Dan had an incredible ability to make a friend everywhere he went. He always went out of his way to make people happy and comfortable. Dan was loved by many friends and family members. He is survived by his wife, Jacklyn; son, Steven; daughters, Lisa Nordeen and Mary Kathryn Whatley; sons-in-law, Ross Nordeen and James Whatley; granddaughters, Anabeth and Hope; grandson, Jacob; brothers, David, Joseph, John, and their families.
