David B. Long, Sr. was called home on Wednesday evening after 81 wonderful years. David came into this world in the very same hospital he left it in, not far from the downtown Orlando home that he shared with his loving wife Mary for 57 years. David was born on March 22, 1934 along with his best friend, his brother Donald, an identical twin. The twins and their little brother Preston, both third generation Orlando shared not only a birthday, but worked and served together. David worked for the Florida Department of Transportation for forty seven years, along with his brother Donald and Preston. For thirty three of those years he served in the Florida Army National Guard, rising to the rank of Staff Sgt. He was honored to be part of the color guard, and proud to earn the distinction of being a sharpshooter.
David was called home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mary, his brothers Donald (Cordelia) and Preston (Jackie), his children David B. (Beverly) Long, Jr. & Jerry Long, his grandchildren Shannon, Jared, Tabitha, & Kole, as well as his great- grandchildren Makenzie and Baby Boy Sprowls who is on the way.
David had a wide and welcoming smile. Prior to Wednesday you could find him multiple times per day with his twin brother at Steak & Shake for coffee. A sweet, mild mannered man, who is described by those who love him and those he loved as always happy. A loving husband, a steady and kind father and a tender grandfather (Poppy) and great grandfather- David B. Long Sr. will be missed and always remembered. David had a deep and abiding faith in God, a faith that survives with his family. They await the day they will see him again, and will be welcomed by that wide and welcoming smile.
Services will take place on Monday at Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.
