After arriving in the United States in 1968, he began working for Merrill Lynch in New York as a Clerk in the Shareholder Department and by the time he left in 1981, had been promoted several times to reach the position of Financial Analyst. He then decided to work in banking and was with Suntrust Bank for several years until his retirement. A giver of his time to others, in 2003 he was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award by President George Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. He worked as a volunteer with Hospice of the Comforter and was also served by them during his last months.
A lifelong lover of learning and an avid reader, he attended Baruch College of the City University of New York and Queens College of the City University of New York (BA Degree) and Pace University in New York for additional accounting certification. He also received training in computer programming, attended the Crummer Real Estate School in Orlando, FL to obtain his real estate license and in his early sixties, went to Valencia College and obtained an AA degree in paralegal studies.
He enjoyed sports, music and reading about history but his passion was his family. A fierce protector since childhood of his two younger sisters all of them migrated from NY to Florida and purchased homes within minutes of each other. Known in their later years by family and close friends as “The Three Musketeers,” they were always together at family events and vacations. The memories that were made during those times will always live on.
Although he had no children of his own, he was a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews. He leaves his youngest sister, Thelma LaMotte; his nieces Annette Gayle (god-daughter) and Camille Hall, his nephew Greg Hall, his grand-nieces Tanya Laguer, Ajani Hoffert, Rebecca Schuster, Georgian Gayle, his grand-nephews Dave Gayle and Dalvin Gayle; his great-grandniece Laila Martin and his great grand-nephews Willie Jones III, Nicholas Hall, Leo Hoffert and a host of “adopted” nieces and nephews who all also knew him affectionately as “Uncle D”. He was preceded in death by his other sister, Elaine Hall. He was also a loyal friend to many and is lovingly remembered by many friends from his childhood and adult years.
