Jay Stephen Hinton Jr, 79, passed away on January 7, 2025. He was born to Jay Stephen Hinton, Sr., and Suzanne Jacqueline Chunn in Newnan, GA, on January 5, 1946. He was married to the late Teresa Foley Hinton for 51 years.
His father was in the military, so Jay moved a lot during his youth and then settled in Orlando, FL, at the age of 17. He graduated from Edgewater High School in 1964. He spent a year at Florida State University then left college to serve our country in the Army during Vietnam. After leaving the Army, he served his community for 30 years as an Officer in the City of Orlando Police Department and then as a Deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. While on the job, he attended Rollins College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree. During his years with the Sheriff’s Office, he headed up the Volunteer Mounted Posse, worked CID and Stolen Property Investigations, was Range Master at the Firearms Range, served on the Dive Team, and was Sergeant over the Marine and Ranch units. He loved to share stories of his time with the Sheriff’s Office and how much he enjoyed it when his sons would visit him on the range.
Jay will be missed by all who knew and loved him for his loyalty, kindness, generosity, and as his patience as a teacher/mentor. He rode the Tail of the Dragon on motorcycles with David and traveled cross country from Florida to Alaska with Jay III. After retirement, he enjoyed riding his motor”sickle”, boating, fishing, perusing gun stores, photography, YouTube, listening to music - specifically country and acoustic guitar - and spending time with his family and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa, in 2020. He is survived by his two sons: Jay (Gina) Hinton of Winter Garden, FL, and David (Colleen) Hinton of Cape Coral, FL. He enjoyed every minute he got to spend with his sons’ families, especially his five grandchildren Noah (18), McKenzie (17), Connor (14), Logan (11), and Nathaniel (10). He was always available to assist when his sons had projects whether it be at home or with cars, and he loved to share his joy of horses with McKenzie.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday February 22nd, 2025, at 4:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Gotha, FL. Please, in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation which helps First Responders, Veterans, and their families cope with the challenges following catastrophic injuries and homelessness.
