In her early adult life, Kathleen was an LPN nurse, as well as a dance instructor at The Arthur Murray School of Dance, both in Baltimore. She retired in 1985 from The University of Maryland Hospital after 20 years as an administrative secretary for the Head of Anesthesiology.
