

Mavumkal Koshy Mathews (Babychan) passed away on January 1, 2017, at home surrounded by his family and friends. His cherished wife of 66 years, Mariamma (Kunjamma), preceded him to their eternal home on July 2, 2016. He is survived by their four children, Koshy Mathews (m. Rosamma), Mary Thomas (m. George), Annie John, and Sherly Alexander (m. Alex), 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his four siblings, Annamma Mathew (Ranni), M.K. John (Bombay), Kunjamma Varghese (Andamans) and M.K. George (Dallas).
He was born in Kuzhikala at his grandparents house to late P.N.Koshy and Mariamma on August 19, 1926 and was raised at Geerakathinal house, Naranganam, Kerala (India). In 1944, at the age of 18, he ventured out for a job to Pune and then to Bombay. He married Mariamma Samuel of Kulangara House, Keekozhoor, on January 10, 1950 and made their home in Bombay and were active members of India Pentecostal Church, Chembur. Babychan worked for The Metal Box Co. of India Worli for 42 years and also owned and operated several small businesses. After living in Bombay for over 45 years, he immigrated to Chicago in 1989. In 1995, they relocated to Ocoee, FL and became active members of IPC Orlando, FL.
In Bombay, he was well known as Worli Babychan and used his influence and wealth to actively seek the welfare and well being of his church family, relatives and hometown neighbors. He was also a father-figure to many, and was affectionately called Papa. Papa and Mummy were known for their generosity, advice and guidance, and ability to make anyone feel welcome. They dedicated the latter part of their lives to help raise their grandchildren and opened their home to anyone who needed it. Papa was dearly loved by his family, friends and community and will be greatly missed.
