Nubia Victoria Morales Hinzmann was born on November 21, 1944, in Suratá, Santander del Sur, Colombia. She was the fourth of eight children. Her family endured difficult times during the period in Colombia known as La Violencia, which affected the safety of her father, a police captain. As a result, much of Nubia’s early education took place at the boarding school Lyceo de las Hermanas Lola y Emilia Sarmiento in Bucaramanga, Colombia. She later attended the Escuela Normal Superior de Señoritas in Bucaramanga and went on to study Social Sciences at the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional de Bogotá. In 1968, she received a scholarship to study English at the University of Kansas, and later earned a master’s degree in geography from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was there that she met her husband of more than thirty years, Gordon Hinzmann.
Following their marriage, the couple returned to Colombia for several years before eventually settling in the United States. They made their home in Detroit, Michigan, where Nubia earned a Master of Arts in Academic Counseling from Wayne State University. She later worked at the university as an academic counselor, supporting and guiding students in their educational pursuits.
In 1981, Nubia and Gordon moved to Orlando, Florida. Shortly after, they welcomed their son, Jeffrey Alexander Hinzmann, followed by their daughter, Monica Christina Hinzmann, in 1984. During her years in Orlando, Nubia dedicated herself to her family as a devoted wife and mother. She also worked part-time as a test proctor for several years.
She enjoyed music and dancing, as well as gardening and spending time in nature. She also had a taste for the finer things in life, with a special fondness for diamonds and emeralds. In addition, she appreciated art and literature and found joy in surrounding herself with beauty in all its forms.
Nubia passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, at 12:07 p.m. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey; her daughter, Monica; her grandsons, Conor and Casey; her sisters, Raquel, Beatriz, and Yaneth; and her brother, Sergio. She will be remembered for her grace, elegance, and unwavering strength and will be dearly missed by all who loved her.
Celebration of Life for Nubia will be conducted on Wednesday, October 22 from 11-1 at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, FL
