She was raised on a dairy farm/ranch and would milk cows and care for all the animals in the morning before going to school; then after school she would take care of her younger siblings.
One evening, Olga went to a dance with her cousin in Havana and there she was introduced to Carlos Ball-Llovera. A year later they were married in 1947; she was 20 and Carlos was 30. They were married for almost 70 years!
In 1959, Olga, Carlos and 3 young children boarded a plane and left Cuba, the only country they'd ever known, for good. Castro took everything from them. What courage it must have taken to arrive in Miami accompanied by 3 young kids with nothing but the clothes on their back. Catholic Social Services helped with their initial entry, and they relocated to Passaic, New Jersey. After settling in New Jersey, they started all over from scratch in the U.S. Carlos worked 2 jobs as a Registered Nurse, and Olga secured a job in a factory that made US Army clothing. Olga was also learning English during this time. They were industrious and within 1 year, they bought their first home. Years later, they started a business, and it operates successfully to this day.
In 1972, the family relocated to Orlando because they were tired of the cold winter weather in New Jersey.
Olga is survived by her children, John (Carol) Ball, Mirtha (Jack) DePlazaola, and Olguita (Fernando) Sikes. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren, Ashley Ball Sarcinello, Natalie Ball, John Ball, Jr. Robert Salek, Anne Zorn Harrison, AnnMarie Sikes Bessire and Lizette Sikes Figueras; and 7 Great grandchildren, Aiden, Joey, Abby, Emily, Nicholas, AnaSofia and John Edward.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Manolo Canel, Pura Mena and Ophelia Badham.
Olga had many passions - she loved gardening and her flowers; she was a wonderful cook and always wanted to feed you when you came over; she was known for her delicious Cuban dishes! She loved playing dominoes, loved animals (especially dogs and cows), and oh how she loved shopping! She loved to decorate her house for every occasion and was happiest when 30 or more family members gathered for dinner parties celebrating holidays and birthdays!
She was a nurturing person with a strong character. If you asked a question or asked for advice, she'd be direct and tell it like it is. It was a delight to talk with Olga and be entertained by her "Spanglish"!
Faith was Olga's foundation, and she was a devout Catholic. She is now at peace and has been reunited with her love Carlos. We miss her dearly but know she is eternally happy in her heavenly home.
