

Virginia “Budge” M. Werner Leopold, age 89, who greeted everyone with “Praise the Lord” and a hug, passed away, Thursday, September 6, 2012, at Florida Hospital Orlando, Orlando FL., after a brief illness. She was born in St. Marys, PA., on May 1, 1923, a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Edith Mary Kaul Werner. She attended St. Marys Catholic Grade School and graduated in 1940 from Central Catholic High School. She graduated from Villa Maria College, in Erie, earning a four-year RN degree. Virginia married her beloved husband, John "Jack" L. Leopold on November 11, 1944. She devoted her life to him, their eight children nuturing her family and friends with her deeply held Catholic beliefs. In Erie, PA she was active in: Mayors Committee for Rehabilitation Crossroads Center, Cathedral Center Choir, Blue Army, Legion of Mary, 3rd Order of St. Francis, St. Peter Cathedral Rosary Society, St. Vincent Nurses Alumni Association, Eucharistic Minister,Volunteer for the Veterans Administration, Volunteer at Soldiers and Sailors home, Marriage Encounter Team leader, International Institute volunteer, Cursillo Movement participants, CFM (Christian Family Movement), the Enthronement of Sacred Heart group and also donated the Rev. Greg Leopold Center in Erie. In Windermere, FL she was active in Holy Family Church, Enthronement of the Sacred Heart group, Perpetual Adoration, Founder - Perpetual Eucharistic Exposition, Founder - Divine Mercy Chapel at Holy Family, Blue Army, Legion of Mary, Eucharistic Minister, Volunteer - Mary Queen of the Universe, Respect for Life - ProLife Counselor, Choir member (Holy Family and MQU), and a member of St. Jude's and St. Peter and Paul Churches . While raising her family, Virginia was a nurse for over 35 years at St. Vincent Hospital and in private duty service. She and Jack traveled the world visiting Europe, UK, Australia, Middle East and India. She also enjoyed gardening, a good game cards and spending
time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Lawrence Leopold; a son, Rev. Gregory Leopold; a brother, Arthur Werner; and three sisters, Rita Werner, Helen Fritz and Edith Knoll. She is survived by her beloved children, Arthur Leopold and wife Susan of Erie, PA, John Leopold of Winter Park FL, Alfred Leopold of Buford, GA, Mark Leopold and his wife, Lisa of Mayfield Heights, OH, James Hynes and his wife, Liesl of Jellystone, CO, Joseph Leopold and his wife Suzanne of Herdon VA, Thomas Hynes of Longwood, FL, 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, and two cherished sisters, Marjorie Conrad and Thecla Coppolo both of St. Marys, PA. A number of beloved nieces, nephews and other family members also survive. The family gives special thanks to her son John who cared for her in his home during her final years.
In Orlando, visitation hours will be September 9th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, at Woodlawn Funreral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial, September 10th at 10:00am at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 5125 South Apopka Vineland Road Orlando, FL. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Leopold family c/o Woodlawn Funeral Home, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, FL 34734.
A Memorial Mass will also be held on September 19th at 10:00 am. at St. Peter Cathedral. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Leopold family c/o St. Peter Cathedral, 239 W. 10th Street, Erie, PA 16501.
