Taylor Remembers Board Chairman, Alumnus Wellington Yu Chiu
Published: Mar 05, 2016
Dr. Wellington Yu Chiu, Chairman of Taylor University’s Board of Trustees and a 1974 Taylor alumnus, died this morning after a sudden illness. He was 63.
Dr. Chiu served as Managing Member of Chiu Capital LLC and Chiu Associates, LP. He was highly regarded for his information technology expertise, and worked in IT and operations in both the banking and publishing fields during his career. Dr. Chiu was also an established entrepreneur and investor in a number of businesses and previously worked as a senior officer at Mosby Matthew Bender, Ziff-Davis Publishing, and Citibank.
Dr. Chiu was named to the Taylor University Board of Trustees in 2000, and went on to serve the Board as Secretary, later as Vice Chairman, and finally as Chairman. Since 1999, he was a Director of First American International Corporation and served as a Board member of the Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund, an initiative which mobilizes resources that create opportunities for deserving Asian American and Pacific Islander students.
In addition to his longtime role on Taylor’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Chiu served on the Board of the Fundación Ramón Pané, a foundation that develops servant leaders from the Roman Catholic laity in the Americas and other parts of the world.
Dr. Chiu earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Taylor and later earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California.
“Wellington was a dear friend who was passionate about the Lord’s work. During my time of service on the Taylor University Board of Trustees, I was impressed with his humble spirit, godly wisdom, and desire to honor the Lord in everything he did in his life, as well as everything that was undertaken by our Board,” said Dr. Mark Taylor, past Chairman of Taylor’s Board of Trustees. “I will always remember and admire Wellington’s dependence upon prayer and his love of the Scriptures. Taylor University has been blessed to have him as an alumnus and Board member and will realize the fruits of his service for years to come.”
“Marylou and I were heartbroken to learn the news of our dear friend Wellington Chiu’s sudden passing,” said Taylor University President, Dr. Eugene B. Habecker. “Wellington was a wise and godly counselor and friend who loved his Lord and Savior and also the people whom God brought into his life. We ask our Taylor University community to join us in prayer for Wellington’s family, loved ones, and friends in the days to come.”
Dr. Chiu is survived by his wife Eli, sons Daniel and David, and daughter Catherine (husband Andrew), as well as a granddaughter, Emma.
