Alexander Charles Murray, age 71, of Davison, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at his home with his family by his side. Alex was born on November 23, 1954 in Flint Michigan to John and Ruth Murray.
Alex wore many hats in his life, but spending time with his family was most important to him. Alex was a devoted husband, a jovial father and an excellent role model to his children. Alex loved his family.
He was the beloved husband of Sylvia, loving father of Rachel and Alina; adoring grandfather to Angelina, kindhearted brother to Greg (Lorrie) Murray and Scott Murray. He is also survived by his faithful fox terrier companion Padraig.
Alex was a historian, golfer, softball player, mail carrier, dog lover, family man, and a true friend to many.
Alex was an active and committed union member with the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 256. Appointed Branch delegate to the Greater Flint AFL-CIO central Labor Council. He later became Vice President of 256 from 1989-2003, then served as President from 2003-2004. He was instrumental in coordinating his Branch’s MDA committee events. Alex understood the importance and strength of community. In 1993, he took on the monumental task of coordinating the Letter Carriers Food Drive, known as the nation’s largest one day food drive. Alex coordinated and led the NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, turning a simple idea into something extraordinary. Over the past 32 years, that effort has brought in more than 9 million pounds of food, providing nearly 8 million meals for communities facing hunger.
After years of volunteer service, Alex joined the Food Bank Board of Directors in September of 2000. For more than three decades, he dedicated his time and heart felt energy to the Food Bank mission. He led with humility and purpose, serving in many roles along the way—Board Chair, Chair-Elect and Board Secretary with the Executive Committee and Chair of the Personnel Committee. Alex also served on the Good Will Board as secretary and had also served as past president of the Kiwanis Club of Flint.
No matter the title, Alex was an example of steadfast leadership with a deep commitment of service to his church and community. Through this service, he organized the church's mobile food distributions, welcomed families with a smile and ensured the food was distributed to those in need. In conjunction with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Alex created and facilitated the Church’s food distribution backpack program.
A well-known and familiar face at the Food Bank, always willing and ready to lend a helping hand, serving at Empty Bowls events, volunteering in the warehouse, checking in and visiting with the team. Alex and his wife Sylvia contributed in a powerful way, providing the equivalent of nearly 400,000 meals throughout 27 years.
.
Alex was a long-standing, devoted member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. He was instrumental in the planning and building of the church, served 2 terms as Board of Directors President and presided over community and non-profit programs.
Alex will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
The family is thankful for the outpouring of love, kindness, and support from family and friends.
