

WALTERS, Allan E. - age 83, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at his residence. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint, MI with Dr. John L. Musgrave, Rev. Paul Ytterock and Pastor Steve Baillie officiating. Mr. Walters will lie in state at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, MI from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. On Thursday Mr. Walters will be taken to the church to lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Following the service there will be a luncheon served at the church. Interment will be made at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2011 at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Music Fund or the Flint Kiwanis Club Educational Foundation. Allan was born on September 30, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the son of Edwin and Caroline (Schumacher) Walters. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated from Milwaukee North High School. He attended Wisconsin State Teachers College and received a B.A. in Education/Music from University of Wisconsin. Allan furthered his education by attending Michigan State University with a Masters in Administration/Education, with advanced work in administration from the University of Oregon and did graduate work at the University of Michigan. For 11 summers he directed the University of Wisconsin summer youth radio program and activities session. During World War II Allan served with the 2nd Infantry Division Band and was honorably discharged May 1, 1947. On June 24, 1951 he was united in marriage to Barbara Unruh. He began his professional career in Sun Prairie, WI. The couple moved to Flint, Michigan in 1953 and began their careers with the Flint Community Schools. Allan started at Northern High School as band teacher. In 1964 he was named Deputy Principal at Northern High School. Later he became Assistant Principal at Northwestern High School, Principal at Lowell Jr. High School, Principal at Zimmerman and retired in 1987 as Principal at Whittier Junior High School. Allan was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church having served as an elder, chorus member and on several pastoral nominating committees. He was an active member and former President of the Flint Kiwanis Club. Allan was a strong supporter of the Flint Symphony and Flint Institute of Music. Surviving are wife Barbara; sister Margaret Gichert and husband Fred; nieces and nephews Jean Gichert of Waterford, WI, Jan Glasenapp and husband Will of Waterford, WI, John Gichert and wife Patti of Denver, CO, Stephanie Anderson of Mesa, AZ, Dwight Anderson and wife Theresa of Dallas, TX, Christopher Anderson and wife Coleen of WI; great nieces and nephews Capt. Robert Gichert and wife Rachel of CA, Capt. Gavin Glasenapp, Capt. Jarrad Glasenapp, Renee Gichert, Michael Gichert, Marcus Gichert, Emma Gichert, Phillip Anderson, Joseph Anderson, Noah Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, Sarah Anderson, Jonathan Anderson and Samuel Anderson. Allan was preceded in death by sister Helen Walters and nephew Dr. Mark Gichert.
