Dear Grandpa, 
You were a teacher for many individuals in all aspects of life. You were a special person and your presence was always uplifting to any situation. I did not have the same interest in history that Kyle did. However, I learned a lot by just watching you two interact. I will forever remember your generosity for others, lighthearted approach to life, and endless jokes. You taught me to value everyday and not take any moment too seriously. Your background in swimming, football, and golf is what led me to cherish these sports in my own life. I remember looking up into the bleachers and seeing you at my swim meets cheering me on. I have never met someone as passionate as you. I wish I would have listened to more stories, but the ones I did hear will stay with me. Thank you for always thinking about me and bringing me little souvenirs and gifts. Looking back now, you have had a large impact on my life and are still impacting it today. I will always think of you on July 4th and celebrate that day in your honor every year. You are a man worthy of celebration. Thank you again for making our house a brighter and warmer place whenever you visited. I miss your visits but we will see each other again. Thank you for being an incredible grandfather, a loved man, and a remarkable role model for many. I wish you could hear how highly everyone speaks of you. It is not often that you come across someone who is so well liked and appreciated. I was lucky to have that someone in my life and even got to call him my grandfather. I will live the rest of my life with your happiness, strength, and selflessness. Thank you for raising an intelligent and compassionate daughter. I am proud to call her my mother. I love you grandpa and miss you everyday. Thank you for sharing so much with me and others. I am certain I will never meet someone like you again.

Dear Grandpa,
I remember vividly the times when we would sit in front of the TV watching the history channel or sports together. Our conversations always managed to end up back in the early 1940's relating to the war most dear to your heart. You taught me so much about how not only World War Two was fought but everything about every year dating from 1926. I always wondered how you remembered so many things from your childhood and early adult life. I think I have finally figured out why. I think you might have been unintentionally rubbing off the lessons and challenges that you had learned onto me. You have instilled the curiosity and drive to never stop learning and always ask questions. I admire your ability to always stay calm and never get down. I would always look forward to you coming over to our house. Whenever you came, I knew that you would always bring fascinating gifts from your past or things that might interest me. I wish that I could spend one more day talking with you. I cherish the times we spent at your house during our annual visits for the Buick Open. I remember going to the nearby pond and struggling to release my fishing rod properly. I never worried though, because you were always there to help. You have made me more into the person I am today than anyone else. You will forever hold a special place in my heart and I will always miss you. I am glad that I had as much time as I did with you. I promise to establish the same charisma, positivity, and virtue in my children and grandchildren in the future. I will carry on your legacy every day and never forget what you have taught me. I guess what I am trying to say is that my favorite memory of you was every memory I had with you. Every moment was special to me and I will miss walking down to the family room on a Sunday morning and seeing you sitting on the couch, hand in a bag of chips, with your beloved Spartans up by a touchdown. Thank you for everything grandpa, I will miss you.

While visiting Chuck and Nan (my daughter) at their home in Arizona along with my sisters, I had the privilege of getting to know Chuck's father a lot better.  We all would stay up until 3:00 am playing euchre.  He had a charming personality and was a very witty person.  He loved teasing my sisters and had nick names for them.  Chuck made out short vacation one to remember.

Cousin Charles (Chuck was his father's name in our house.)  was a frequent visitor to our family home in Flushing when I was growing up.  I remember the holiday poker gatherings after dinner when Charles, Gerry, Chuck, Ike, Jim, Tom, and sometimes others would go at it.  I watched but was too young to play.  I suspect that Charles held his own.  Later in my life I came to regard Charles as a story teller.  He always had something interesting to say, often with a little historical twist.  I don't recall his ever bad-mouthing anyone.  He has a fortunate family in that they were all blessed by him.  He will be missed.

I commend Rebecca and Chuck on a well thought out service of their beloved father and my uncle.  Uncle Chuck gave me my first swim instructor job.  He always ate bologna sandwiches with mustard and because of him I learned to like them also.  I can't remember Uncle Chuck ever getting mad.  He was a wonderful uncle and will be dearly missed.

I had Mr. Wallin for Civics and Econ. I studied really hard as those were subjects i worried about. He was always kind, always so funny. His best advice was to memorize our social security number. I did and he was right! Glad I had him for a teacher. Sorry for his family and friends. But i surely have great memories. Nancy, Class of 1971

I have so many fond memories spent with the Wallin family.  I was lucky to have Mr. Wallin as a teacher and even luckier to to have become best friends with Becky all through high school and spend much time at the house and cottage on Opal Lake.  He tried to teach me to water ski and I swear he almost drowned me when I had him as a life guard instructor, but he passed me and I went on to teach Aquatots in Carman's pool.  Becky and I then went off to Alma College where we started together as roommates.  I treasure those years and Mr. Wallin always made feel welcome and a part of the family. His patience, warmth, and caring for his students and others inspired me in some ways to become a teacher and now principal.  I wish I would have stayed in touch throughout the years, as the tributes noted here testify to the many lives he influenced and give evidence that to know him was to love him.  I hope that all his loved ones find comfort in that they were so blessed to have called him husband, father, teacher, and/or friend. Sending my thoughts and prayers!

I had the privilege of having Charlie as a good friend, class mate, and team mate both at Flushing High School and Flint Junior College (now Mott Community College).  Charlie was a talented athlete and a great team mate. He was an integral member of the 1944 Basketball Conference Championship Team at Flushing High School.  It was the first unshared Basketball Conference Championship attained by Flushing High School.  The team went on to be District Champions and Regional Finalists. I treasure my memories of Charlie and his friendship.

Charlie... My teacher (Ainsworth HS), my colleague (Carman HS/CAHS), my fishing & hunting partner, my Friend.  You were special and will be missed by all that knew you.

Becky, Chuck, Jennifer, so sad to hear of your Father's passing. I fondly remember our families' get-togethers while our Dad's were coaching.  His smile was so frequent and so natural and genuine he was always a welcoming presence.  That is probably why he was such an effective teacher and so highly respected in the community.  My sympathies and prayers for the three of you and your Mom.

Mr. Wallin was among my favorite teachers ever. In 84-85 I had him for US History at Carman. He obviously loved the subject and taught it clearly and well. This was the last period of the day and sometimes our class got a bit 'off-task.' Even in those moments, Mr. Wallin had a way of managing things in a gentle and effective way, typically wearing a playful grin. 
I've thought fondly of Mr. Wallin and his influence on my life often over the past 30 years. I went on to major in History, earn a masters in History Education, and taught the subject for many years before writing and editing  books on history. 
Thanks for being such a fine teacher and man, Mr. Wallin. My sincere hopes for the comfort of good memories to all the Wallins.

Chuck Wallin was a great and wonderful man. I only knew him during his later years but he was truly unforgettable. He always had a grin on his face and a twinkle in his eye and a good story to tell. I knew him through the Dutch Connection Bike tours and tonight we had a reunion where many amusing and heartfelt stories were told in his memory. He would have loved to have been there. He will be truly missed by all of us in the biking community. Love you, Chuck

Many memories of Mr.Wallin! He was a crazy but fun man with a gentle attitude! We will forever remember him on Cabot Dr. As a wonderful teacher , neighbor and friend!

I have very fond memories of Mr. Wallin's history class and those times when was able to zing back at a wise apple student. Thanks to Mr. Wallin, I finally watched Gone With the Wind from start to finish. Salute to you, sir.

I have nothing but the fondest memories of Mr. Wallin and the entire Wallin family.  He was certainly one of a kind who was not only a wonderful teacher and coach, but a truly genuine and kind person

Chuck was one of the best parts of the Dutch Connection biking trips!  He had a wonderful voice and we will always remember him singing at talent night. One year he dressed up and sang "My Way" and sounded just like Frank Sinatra!  Another memorable evening was when he teamed up with Dutch Bob to sing "I Ain't Talking, I Ain't Squawking, I Don't Care".  Whether losing the van in Amsterdam or telling a funny story with a very straight face, we will fondly remember Chuck. Rest in peace, dear friend.

I never had Mr. Wallin as a teacher or Coach at Carman High, but he was a big part of our school, an unforgettable presence. May he rest in peace, and may the God of all comfort be with the Wallin family.

"Mr. Chuck" was nothing short of a delight.  Say his name to anyone that knew him and immediately a picture of a jovial man with an "I know something you don't know" grin comes to mind.  

A kinder man You will not find.  I recall one summer I broke the clutch cable on my beat up Chevy Chevette.  Somehow I managed to get the car over to the Wallin's knowing Mr. Chuck would be able to help.  He immediately took me to the salvage yard, dug through the cars to find the exact cable, put it on for me and I was back in business that day.  

An avid garage sale golf club collector he once set me up with a mix match set of clubs so I could have something slightly respectable to hack around with.  

Too many stories to tell but needless to say he will forever be in my thoughts as a wonderful one-of-a-kind person.

I am sorry for your loss.  My thoughts and prayers are with your family.  Mr.  Wallin was my Freshman Basketball Coach.  My favorite memories of him is that he would suit up and play with us at practice.  Only coach to ever do that.  RIP Mr. Wallin.

Coach teacher mentor and friend! Your sense of humor was fabulous! Very witty and you are a smart man! You are a great coach! A giver not a taker! Gave your whole life for the kids! That left handed hook shot from the corner! Swish! Those ride homes you gave me after practice! Loved your civics and Econ class! Loved how you dropped berrymans suit jacket on the floor when it was on your classroom door handle! Loved that I got to see and talk to you in October of 2013 after not seeing you for 35 years! You will be missed! I will never forget you! Love you mr Wallin!

I remember Mr. Wallin from Carman, even though I never had him as a teacher.  He was a very kind man.  He knew my family and visited my mom whenever he found a little cat of some sort.  He was always bringing her some little cat figurine whenever he found one at a garage sale or estate sale.  My mom was Betty Bastien and she also did sewing for him.  Prayers are being said for your entire family.

I will always remember his wonderful approach to history at Carman HS.  He was also my football coach and worked us hard.  He had a great and special character and influence. For me I went on and studied history at college and played football.  Much of that due to my experience with Mr. Wallin.  

I am proud to see he was in the Naval Air program.  I went on to join the Navy post college in that program also as an aviator.  He must have influenced me more than I realized.

Thanks Mr. W for what you did for me, it means a lot! I just know you are flying in the PBY now watching over us all.

I remember Mr Wallin from Carman in 1973. He was an expert on Revolutionary and Civil war weapons and taught us all about them.

I have such fond memories of my favorite High School teacher, Mr. Wallin.  He made homeroom and history a treat.

Mr. Wallin was one of a kind! He was a dedicated teacher who had a real zest for life and fun! My mom, Betty Rathburn had lots of stories to tell about him and his card playig buddies! I imagine they are all having a great reunion at the card table in heaven ! My sincere condolences to friends and family for the loss of this special man!

Charlie Wallin was a great man, a good teacher and one who always had a smile on his face.  His quiet/dry sense of humor is what I remember the most.  He was always so brutally honest with his students and his colleagues (I had the privilege of be both)...he touched many, many lives in a positive way.  GRIP Mr. Wallin.

I will for ever have the nick name that he gave me "Bushy". I enjoyed the times that he would stop at the police department to just talk. I will be unable to make it to the funeral as I will be out of state. Known that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
