Goldie was born March 29, 1923 in Bernie, MO to parents James and Ora May
(Vineyard) Kifer. She was on of eleven siblings and was particularly close to her
youngest sister Amy Becking who preceded her in death and “Tootsie” Thurston. At the
age of nineteen she moved to Flint and shortly there after began working for Buick
Motor Division. She was one of the first women to be employed by Buick, where she
worked for thirty years, before her early retirement. She met her beloved husband Donald
shortly after the move. When they first met she was a waitress in a diner. Don was really
interested in her but had to leave the diner for an appointment. So he told her he was
going to leave his hat (in the rack) until he came back. When she was ready to close the
diner Don reappeared to get his hat and they were never separated for the next sixty years.
Don preceded her in death December of 1999, but she continued to dearly miss him
during her remaining years. They took trips to Missouri, Gladwin, MI and other places.
They owned a condo in Palm Beach, FL. Don and Goldie would frequently “go dancing”
at Russelville on Saturday nights. Goldie loved to collect antiques and socialize. She was
a charter member of the Non Homos Club in Flint. She had several friends, especially in
her neighborhood. She was a very kind and optimistic woman. Her optimism was
contagious and people always felt positive about being around her. She had two sons
Donald (Stephanie) and Michael Emery (Deceased); five grandchildren Andrew, Adam,
Donnie, Tara, Tamra Alden who remained at her side for her last days and nights, until
she passed away; one sister Helen (George); three remaining nieces Lana and Cindi
Becking, Vickie Brown. God Bless Our Beloved Goldie.
