

CALHOUN, Nettie M.,“Scottie” – Of Ann Arbor, age 89, died Monday, November 20, 2017, at the Residence of Arbor Hospice in Saline. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 1-4pm at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to the University of Michigan School of Education or the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Fund. Scottie was born May 3, 1928 in Flint Michigan to Mary Alice (Innis) and George Fletcher. She transferred from Flint Junior College in 1948 to the University of Michigan, from which graduated June 1950 with a Bachelor’s degree and Teachers Certificate in English with minors in General Science and Social Studies. She married John Clinton Calhoun of Flint on August 15, 1953 and continued to teach in the Flint and East Lansing areas until her first child was born in 1960. She returned to teaching for Mott Adult High School in Flint in the 1980s until her retirement in May, 1990. Scottie was a life member of the service sorority Epsilon Sigma Alpha and in her later years a tireless campaigner for President Obama in Ann Arbor. She supported several women’s organizations and was a benefactor of the St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program in Ann Arbor. She was preceded in death by husband John in 2004. Surviving are: children Elizabeth, John Charles, and Geordie Calhoun; her dear friends of her bi-weekly “Girls Night Out” especially Cathy Erdly and Nancy Gross; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and the greater communion of University of Michigan football fandom.
