

Ruth attended Michigan State University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Music, a field she cherished throughout her life. She worked at the Genesee County Community Mental Health Center, serving as a Representative Payee, and retired with a legacy of dedication and compassion for her community. Ruth also served as an organist at several Flint area churches, including Court Street United Methodist Church, Woodside Church, Temple Beth El, and First Church of Christ, Scientist. Ruth’s music brought solace, inspiration, and joy to many people over the years. Her musical talents graced countless services, weddings, and events across Michigan, as she frequently filled in for other churches as a substitute.
Ruth was known not only for her music but also for her love of tennis, both watching and playing, and her unwavering commitment to her faith and community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Edna Outland, her brothers Robert Outland, Gerald Outland, and Jack Swick, her daughter Rebecca Gwillim, and her husbands Alfred Gwillim and Roger Sharpe.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Gwilym (Keith), her son, Thomas Gwillim (Tammy), and her grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Gwillim.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Court Street United Methodist Church, located at 225 W. Court Street, Flint, Michigan. Friends and family are invited to honor Ruth’s memory, her dedication to her faith, and her love for music.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be made in Ruth’s name to Court Street United Methodist Church.
