Ben is survived by his parents, Gerund and Joan Coonprom, as well as numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins across Colorado, Thailand, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, and Arizona. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents in Wisconsin and his paternal grandparents in Thailand.
Born on June 26, 1999, in Grand Junction, Colorado, Benjamin was a miracle child for Gerund and Joan, who had been told they would never have children. He was born the day before his mother’s 41st birthday and was a dearly beloved son.
In 2015, Ben experienced a near-fatal episode when he was airlifted to Denver and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 16. Living with and managing this disease was a significant challenge for him. Combined with another illness, diabetes was a contributing factor in his death.
Ben was homeschooled for most of his education. He spent a year at Caprock Academy, a year at Holy Family Elementary School, and a year at Grand Valley Christian High School, where both his parents taught that year. He received his high school diploma in May 2018.
He did not easily settle on a career path for his life. Ben decided against a university education, instead choosing to study massage therapy. He found success, but not enjoyment in that field. He went on to work in the oil field, at a medical lab, at landscaping, home health care, retail sales, bar tending, at an Asian food store, and as a sound board technician. He worked in construction, and most recently as a handyman and painter.
His true passion was music. Ben was a talented guitarist, pianist, and a clever and gifted lyricist. He created hundreds of songs using a digital audio workstation on his computer, often collaborating with friends. He was also an excellent cook, frequently preparing ethnic dishes for his family and friends.
Benjamin was known as an old soul, possessing wisdom beyond his years. He was a great listener and spoke thoughtfully. He related well to people of all ages and backgrounds. Ben was especially wonderful with children. He will be deeply missed.
Services will be held at Canyon View Vineyard Church Chapel on Friday, May 24th. A public visitation and farewell, accompanied by a slideshow of his life, will take place from 3 to 5 pm, followed by his funeral at 5 pm and a meal in the chapel dining room at 6 pm. Benjamin will be laid to rest in Wisconsin alongside five generations of his ancestors.
