Billy was born on August 16, 1940. He graduated from Plains High School in Plains, Texas. He attended South Plains Junior College where he played baseball. He married Robby Jo Vernon on January 29,1961. He lived in Tokio, Texas, until he and Robby moved to Grand Junction in 1963. He worked at City Market Warehouse for 35 years before retiring in 1998.
Billy loved his family. One of his greatest joys were his children and grandchildren. He spent countless hours riding horses, fishing, hunting and camping with his family. He was very busy with baseball, football, wrestling, and 4H activities with his children.
Billy loved baseball. As a coach, he didn’t just teach the fundamentals of baseball, he taught his players about integrity. His kind and calm demeanor, no matter the situation, was a testament to the kind of person Billy was.
Billy was a cowboy. He shared his love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing and his horses with his family. He loved spending time in the mountains as a hunting guide and over the years he helped many hunters fill their license. He was not just a hunting guide - he was an exceptional hunting guide. Billy was happy in the saddle of a horse. As he rode horses through the woods with his children, he would often sing songs of praise and hymns. Billy was not a singer . . . . but God considered it a joyful noise!
Billy loved the Lord Jesus. When asked what his favorite Bible verse was, he responded Joshua 24:15. In short, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” This verse was the foundation he and Robby lived by while raising their family. He was a member of Clifton Assembly of God where he served as Deacon/Board member for 28 years and drove the church van each Sunday & Wednesday. He was active in the men’s Bible study and he and Robby hosted small group in their home.
Billy was a beacon of kindness and love. He will reside in the hearts of his family and friends forever. His departure leaves an unfillable void in the lives of those who love him, yet comfort can be found in fond memories and the promise of eternal life through Jesus.
The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude for those who cared for him during his illness. A special thanks to Hopewest Hospice nurses Allie and Charlotte. Their kindness and care for Billy did not go unnoticed.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 28th, 10:00 a.m. at Clifton Assembly of God. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to:
