Blake Burtard, born on December 5, 1987, to Hillari and David Burtard, was a beloved son, brother to Colt, Ty, and Paisley, and a cherished friend to many. His love for the outdoors knew no bounds, as he passionately embraced hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling. While growing up in Fruita he was an active member of 4-H and the Future Farmers of America, Blake's roots in community and nature ran deep.
In February 2007, Blake pursued his lifelong dream in Pueblo, Colorado, enrolling in Silver State Helicopter School to become a helicopter pilot. His unwavering determination saw him through the sudden closure of the school, as he earned his private, instrument, and commercial ratings. Undeterred, Blake continued his aviation journey at Flight Above in St. George, Utah, obtaining his CFI and CFII ratings.
Despite the challenges posed by an influx of pilots, Blake's resilience led him to complete the Mesa State College Police Academy and serve as a police officer in Delta, Colorado, at the young age of 21. However, the sky called him back, and he soon became a revered helicopter flight instructor at Suncrest Aviation in Grand Junction, sharing his passion for flying with many, including his brother, Colt.
Blake's adventurous spirit took him from pollinating rice fields in Texas to conducting tours over Mount Saint Helens and drying cherries in Wenatchee, Washington. His expertise and dedication earned him a position at Sundance Helicopter Tours in Las Vegas, a testament to his skill and passion for aviation.
In 2017, seeking personal growth and healing, Blake courageously entered the Phoenix Recovery Center in Draper, Utah. Completing the program, he devoted himself to helping others, working at the Phoenix Men’s Program and later at Mind Springs as a peer support professional and primary counselor for the Men’s Circle Program. His commitment to recovery and support for those battling addiction was unwavering, as he faithfully attended AA meetings and collaborated closely with the St. Mary's Addiction Clinic.
Despite facing personal health challenges, including three hip surgeries and two full hip replacements, Blake's spirit remained steadfast. His dedication to aiding others and his relentless fight against addiction were sources of inspiration to all who knew him.
On Sunday, January 21, we lost Blake to the very struggle he fought so valiantly against. His time on earth was a testament to courage, resilience, and an unyielding dedication to bettering not just himself, but the world around him. Blake's impact on the lives he touched will forever be remembered, and he will be deeply missed. As we gather to celebrate his life, let us hold Blake in our hearts, honor his journey, and cherish the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
A celebration of life for Blake will be held Friday, January 26, 2024 at 4:00 PM at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary & Crematory, 2515 Patterson Rd., Grand Junction, Colorado 81505, followed by a reception from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
