David D. Schafer
February 17, 1937 - June 5, 2014
David D. Schafer, 77, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital on June 5, 2014.
He was born in LaVerne, Oklahoma to Daniel C. and Lola F. (Burdick) Schafer. The family moved to Colorado in 1939. Being the youngest of eight earned him the nickname ""Sonny"" for the rest of his life.
He grew up in the Cortez area, graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School, and then playing football at CU in Boulder.
In 1957, he married Joyce M. Martin, and to this union were born three children; son, Milton D. of Grand Junction, and daughters, Sherry S. Booher and Judy D. Manee, also of Grand Junction. Starting in Slick Rock, Colorado, they lived in Nucla, Dove Creek and Cortez before moving to Grand Junction in 1964.
David worked as an electrician and was a general contractor for many years, building numerous homes in the Grand Junction area.
He was very active at First Assembly/Victory Life Church; serving as Sunday School teacher, soloist, board member and going on many missions trips to help others. Dave was a family-loving man of sincere faith, huge generosity, and compassionate heart.
Another love of Dave's was music. He played guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. Some of his favorite times were spent playing instruments with family and friends. An exceptional vocal ability was recognized at an early age by school teachers, who often asked him to sing for their classes. Dave left a legacy of his love for music and for his Lord Jesus, with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and children, David is survived by three sisters, Della Berlin of Grand Junction; Velma Jordan of Arroyo Grande, California, and Virginia McCullough of Grants, NM; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Victory Life Church on Tuesday, June 10, with viewing at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Victory Life Church.
