Doyle was born in Paducah, Texas on January, 28, 1929. He is the son of Floyd & Ethel (Boil) McCain. He was very proud that John McCain was a relative of his. Doyle grew up farming cotton in Texas. The family lived in a dirt floor shack. He would often tell stories about how his brothers would run around with Waylon and Willie…. He had a 8th grade education and would joke about going to high school, “I went in the front door and right out the back door”. Around the age of 18 he moved to Grand Junction CO to work in Palisade, picking peaches, this is when he met the love of his life, Dorothy (Riggle) McCain. The couple were married 67 years before Dorothy’s passing in 2018. Doyle always had a goal of living to 100, but after Dorothy passed he decided making it to 100 wasn’t all that important. The Western channel was always on in the McCain household except for when the Price Is Right was airing. He was a man of few words and could be quite cantankerous at times, especially during his later years. He was an avid collector of things…. Fish Tanks, Clocks, Oil Lamps. He worked as a Clerk at City Market for 36 years, retiring in 1990. After retiring he and Dorothy started their Blue Mesa adventure where they would live during the summer for several years. The pair made many lifelong friends during that time and loved having their grandchildren spend time with them there. Doyle and Dorothy would “can” all the salmon they caught each year. The family is happy to be throwing away the last case of canned salmon. One thing the family will miss is Grandpa’s famous home-made ice cream, this was a staple at all family gatherings. Doyle was a huge Baseball fan. There weren’t many Juco games he missed and once the new Colorado Mesa Stadium was built, he would watch as many of those games as he could, after all, his home of 35 years was across the street. He would chuckle collecting the foul balls found in his yard, and not giving them back. Doyle was the father to 4 boys, Lyle (Annette) McCain, Ronald (Dianna) McCain, Larry (Debbie) McCain and Richard McCain. He had 9 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a sincere Thank You to all the Caregivers, HopeWest and Red Cliffs Post Accute Care, for your loving and patient care over the last couple years. Graveside Services were held at an earlier date. Even though you can’t see it grandpa, we’re sure you’ve been reunited with grandma in heaven.
