

On June 18, 1950, Duane was united in marriage to Phyllis Peterson at the Enne Lutheran Church in Herndon, Kansas. They made their home in Oberlin until 1951. In December 1951 Duane entered the Air Force. He was assigned the position of crew chief and charged with keeping a B-29 and KC-97 tanker air-ready for the flight crew. Discharged in 1955, Duane returned home and to his job. In 1955 they were blessed with the arrival of their first son, Michael Dean. In 1961 they were blessed again with a son, Mark Eugene.
Duane worked in the retail building material business for 35 years before retiring in 1985. During these years he acquired lumberyards in Scott City, Kansas and Erie, Colorado with two of his friends. He retired again in 1990.
Duane enjoyed going to his son’s athletic events and later to his grandchildren’s special events. Duane enjoyed playing golf, especially with his sons and grandson.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and four brothers. He leaves behind his wife of 73 years, Phyllis, sons Mike (Debbie), and Mark. Other survivors include grandchildren Nikki Berry, Travis Berry, Jason Berry (Colleen), Kayla Berry (Brian), Tyler Berry, and great-grandchildren Declan and Kate Berry. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Callahan Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Road, Grand Junction, CO 81505.
