Freada Margaret (Anderson) Weil passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 7, 2015. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 24, 1925 along with her twin brother Fred to John George and Ruth Rosanna (Barron) Anderson. Freada and Fred were the last of 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. They were Wilford “Dandy”, Inola, Buster, Georgia “Buddie”, Dallas, Fred and Freada. When Freada was just 2 weeks old the family moved to Delhi in southwest Oklahoma. They went to pick cotton that fall and stayed on. In the summer they chopped the cotton, and in the fall they picked or pulled it. Those years picking cotton would remain with Freada throughout her life. Freada attended school in Delhi, Fox and Plainview where she enjoyed sports, particularly basketball. After Freada graduated from high school in 1943 she went to live with her sister, Buddie, in Oklahoma City and worked at Douglas Aircraft Co. in support of the war effort. She put tar around the rivets on aircraft. She later attended classes at Oklahoma University. It was there that she met Stanley Barney Weil. They married on April 13, 1946. Stanley was a chemical engineer and his work in oil refineries took them to different states. They lived in Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi, California and eventually Colorado where they remained. They had three children, Cyndi (b. 1947), Lisa (b. 1952), and David (b. 1956).
Freada enjoyed playing bridge, bluegrass and folk music, traveling, wildflowers, OU football, needlework and quilting. She bestowed upon her children and grandchildren beautiful handmade work. She was a veracious reader and was a life long learner in the true sense of the word. She loved animals and would rescue more than one stray cat in her later years. Later in life Freada and Stanley spent summers traveling with their children and grandchildren in the motor home visiting national parks and after retirement they spent winters in the south. They also spent many years attending the Church of God in the various communities they lived in.
While not a life without some regret, she lived her life with grace and dignity, and was known for her generosity. You could not leave her home without her giving you something rather it be a baggie of quarters, a crisp $20 from the cookbook, or food for the trip home.
Freada was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings. She is survived by her three children, Cynthia “Cyndi” Leinberger of Colorado, Lisa and son-in-law Jim Stark of Oklahoma, David and daughter-in-law Leona Weil of Montana; her four grandchildren, Dianna Leinberger and her husband Jeremy Douse of Alaska, Luke Leinberger of Colorado, Michael Mckay, Sarah and her husband Darron Rich all of Oklahoma; her five great-grandchildren, Kailee and Cody Mckay of Arkansas, Hannah and Eli Rich of Oklahoma, Kaitlyn Douse of Alaska; and her beloved kitty, Oreo. While we were willing to let her go, she is forever with us.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. at Mesa View Retirement Center in Grand Junction. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to any Mesa County animal rescue fund, including Roice-Hurst Humane Society, P.O. Box 4040, Grand Junction, CO 81502; or CLAWS, 2214 Sanford Drive, No. A5, Grand Junction, CO 81505.
Friends and family will gather on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m. to place Freada’s ashes. Her ashes will be placed in a grave next to Stanley’s under a shared headstone at Clover Cemetery in Collbran, CO. While not in the open plains of Oklahoma, a place that continued to be home in her heart, the view from the cemetery looks over a green valley of the west and there will be wildflowers.
