Helen was born January 21, 1934, to John and Ida Gitchell in Campo, Colorado. The family moved to Mesa, Colorado, in 1938 where Helen attended school and graduated in the class of 1951. She married William (Bill) Allen Carnahan on July 7, 1952, in Collbran, Colorado. She worked for a while for the famous Doc Ziegel at the Plateau Valley Hospital. Antiquing, yard sales, auctions and restoring old trunks she’d found at those different venues was her passion. She created several works of art by hand embroidering all the seams of patchwork quilts she’d made. She also experimented with painting and most family members have an old oil or milk can with one of her masterpieces on it. She was very much a historian of the family trees of Plateau Valley and knew of relatives back to the 7th or 8th cousin. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband; her parents; brother, David, sisters Betty, Mary Ellen, and Ruby; her children, daughter Celia Lou, Mary Lee (infant daughter) and son Michael Allen. She is survived by her daughter Cathy Carnahan of Bandon, OR, son James (Jim) Carnahan (Janell) of Molina, CO, and daughter Teresa Carnahan of Ogden, UT; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 6, at the Mesa Cemetery at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope West Hospice.
