In 1956 he joined the Navy, serving on the Escort Destroyer, USS Basilone (DDE824) as a radar man serving in the Mediterranean during the Suez Crisis and patrolling the coast of Lebanon in the political upheaval. Later they moved to a horse ranch in the mountains near Denver where they raised their son and daughter. In 2005, he sold his store and they moved their horse ranch to Ridgway to enjoy a quieter lifestyle and enjoy the mountains.
