Maxine Royl Reid passed away on December 21, 2025, at Hampton Place Healthcare in Rogers, AR. Maxine was born on May 25, 1930, to Antone and Lottie Steinmetz in Meeker, CO. She was the youngest and last surviving of six children.
After graduating from Meeker High School, Maxine worked in the Rio Blanco County Courthouse. She met George Wayne Reid when he was working in the oil fields in Northwest Colorado. George, a proud Texan, was a decorated veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II. They wed on January 10, 1954.
George was soon promoted to oil well business manager and superintendent, a job that took him and Maxine to Kansas, Wyoming, Nebraska, and throughout Colorado. On August 21, 1956, they celebrated the birth of their daughter Janice Avilla in Greensburg, KS. They moved and settled in Ft. Morgan, CO, and George continued to travel extensively to drill oil wells in many states while Maxine tended to their home and growing family. On July 10, 1963, George Wesley was born to them in Ft. Morgan. In 1964, while George was drilling a well in Ohio, he suffered a severe hand injury and retired from the oil business. The family then moved from Ft. Morgan to De Beque Canyon, near Palisade, CO where George and Maxine bought and operated the Fawn Gift Shop for 33 years before retiring and moving into Palisade, CO.
Maxine was an active member of the Palisade community for decades. She and George were members of the Palisade Christian Church for over 35 years. They loved to spend time with their children and only grandchild, Mallory. After George passed away in 2019, Maxine followed Janice and her husband Stephen Davis when they relocated to Northwest Arkansas.
Maxine leaves behind her daughter, Janice Reid-Davis, and son-in law, Stephen Davis, of Springdale, AR; son, George Wesley, and daughter-in-law, Carrie Reid, of Lansing, WV; granddaughter, Mallory DeZwarte, and her husband, Ryan DeZwarte, and three great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Addison, and Isaiah, of Kellogg, IA.
A funeral service will be held on January 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction, CO. A light catered lunch will follow the service.
