In 1925, a baby girl was born in Appleton, CO, into a family of 6, making 7. Ascension Puente and Sabina Puente had a new addition, Michelle. Later Michelle met Antonio (Tony) Garcia and in 1941 they were married. In 1948 Michelle welcomed her first daughter, Shirley Jean. Four years later, Teresa Jane became daughter number 2. Then in 1955 was daughter 3, Barbara Sue. In 1960 her first son, Anthony Michael, was born, but did not survive. In 1962 Thomas Andrew completed the family.
Growing up on her father’s farm, she helped make meals for the farm hands. This is where she learned to make the food that pleased thousands over her lifetime. With this knowledge she opened up her restaurant, El Charro Cafe, becoming the first Hispanic woman to own a business in Grand Junction.
Many people knew Michelle as Mickey, but to 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, she was known as mom and grandma.
After years of serving others, Michelle was called home on June 4, 2018. She is loved and will be missed.
Viewing will be at Callahan Edfast on Sunday, June 10, from 4-6pm with Rosary at 6pm. Services will be at St. Joseph's on Monday, June 11, at 10:00am.
