Wayne was born on July 5, 1950 from the union of Dora and Merle Campbell in Gunnison, Colorado. The family moved to Collbran, Colorado when Wayne was a year old, where he grew up on the family ranch. He graduated from the Plateau Valley High School in 1968 and later graduated from Mesa State College in 1970 with an Associate in Applied Science degree. He was in the United States Army from 1970 until he was honorably discharged in 1972.
Wayne returned to the family farm to continue ranching and also worked in auto repair and Vehicle Fleet Management. He would continue to ranch on the family farm until his retirement ten years ago.
Wayne married Joy Nelson on July 5, 1974, at the family ranch; she survives.
The last ten years of Wayne’s life were spent in Grand Junction, Colorado. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking. For Wayne, working on the ranch was engrained in his life. Family and friends may remember the story he would tell from his time as a 12-13 year old. His Dad asked him what he wanted for his birthday and he replied “to spend it on the tractor cutting hay.” His Dad was happy to oblige. Weather permitting, he spent many more birthdays haying over the years.
Wayne leaves behind his wife of fifty years, Joy Campbell of Grand Junction, Colorado, and a daughter, Sheila Campbell of Collbran, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents.
