Carl was born December 10, 1937, in Bellefontaine, OH, the son of Joseph Earl Byler and Norma Arlene Yoder Byler. At age 8, his family moved from West Liberty, OH to a farm near Smithville OH, where he spent the rest of his childhood years. At Smithville High School, where he graduated in 1955, he was known as “Mousie”. He participated in track and football in high school. He looked forward to the class reunions in later years and would drive from Texas to Ohio for a few hours with classmates.
In 1957, Carl enlisted in the US Navy and volunteered to join the Navy Submarine Service. He completed the prestigious "Qualified in Submarines" requirements aboard the USS George Washington SSBN/SSN598, the first operational nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine in the US Navy. On July 20, 1960, he was a crew member when the first successful Polaris missile was launched. In 1962, Carl was honorably discharged from military service as an EN2(SS). As a qualified US Navy Submarine Veteran, he was eligible to join the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) veteran’s organization.
In January 1998 Carl joined the USSVI Dallas Base and for the next 25 years until his passing, he enthusiastically supported USSVI and particularly the Dallas Base by being one of the first to raise his hand when help was needed. Carl was very well-liked, and his submarine shipmates will miss his comradeship. After his time in the Navy, Carl made his home in Texas. Among other jobs, he worked as a computer programmer and manager of software support. His hobbies over the years included hunting, skiing and shooting competitions. He joined the Lone Star Ski Club where he competed and earned gold and silver medals. He enjoyed his times at shooting events and belonged to the Comanche Valley Vigilantes, Lone Star Frontier Shooting Club, Texas10 Horns, and Old Fort Parker Patriots. He was known as "Sagebrush Shorty". Known by some as the “Cool Uncle”, he took interest in the activities of his family members. His sense of humor and funny stories gave family and friends many moments of joy.
