Doris Nadine Carr Brown was born March 12, 1929 in Harper County Kansas. Arriving as the 5th child to parents Roy Edward and Edith Mable Carr, she joined her siblings, Norma, Don, Noreen, Duane and later became big sister to Dennis and Nardith. The Carr family was a fun, loving, caring and busy family, well known in the school system and community. The Carr kids were raised to love God and one another and exemplified the Fruits of the Spirit all through their lives, passing this on to their own families.
Nadine was her daddy’s “Little Jewel”. She was a helper and peacemaker in the household. Always a rule follower, she wanted to do the right thing. The Carr’s were a very patriotic family and loved our country. On Memorial Day, Nadine would help her dad by placing flowers at the local cemetery. In 5th grade, she received a dress that was red, white and blue, this was her favorite dress and she was always drawn to clothing with these colors.
Nadine was involved in extracurricular activities in school, as were her siblings. They were in the marching band and played football, Nadine played the flute and piccolo in the band and also worked as an office clerk. When friends or neighbors lost track of school activities and times, it was the Carr’s they would reach out to.
After graduation in 1947, Nadine took the train to Emporia, Kansas to start her higher education at Emporia State. After college, she moved to Wichita, Kansas and began work. In Wichita, while on a double date, she met the man that would become her soulmate. It was her friend’s date, Charles Brown, that would lock eyes with Nadine. He asked her to go out on their first date on a Wednesday evening, however she quickly informed him that was church night but he could join her for church. She set her priorities up front and in 1954, the couple was married in her hometown of Harper, Kansas. After marrying, they moved to Long Branch, NJ for Chuck to complete his duties in the Army.
In 1955, the Brown’s moved back to Wichita, Kansas and both began their careers until the arrival of their first child, Rebecca Sue (Becky) in 1957. At that point, Nadine became a full time wife and mother, a position she cherished and excelled at! In 1960, they welcomed Stanley Kent, in 1963 Steven Charles and completed their family with the arrival of Ann Elizabeth in 1965. Mom loved each of her family members the same and went to all measures to ensure we were loved and nurtured which included her sleepless nights and special love and attention in the rocking chair complete with a calming song.
Nadine and Chuck were very active in their church, participating in different areas of ministry as well as teaching bible classes. Taking after her mother, Nadine was an amazing cook, if she touched it, it was prepared with a healthy helping of love and was perfect and delicious! Cooking was a passion of hers and she used this talent to minister to others at a time of need, bringing joy or showing love. The church youth activities at the Brown house held record attendance because Mrs. Brown was cooking which included her infamous cinnamon rolls.
After Chuck retired in 1993, they enjoyed several trips together including a fantastic celebration trip for their 50th anniversary with a land and sea trip through Alaska. Nadine enjoyed visits with family and friends, a nice ice cold Coke, a good football, basketball or baseball game (mostly collegiate level). She regularly watched her favorites, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie and America’s Funniest Videos, as long as it didn’t conflict with her sports. A true passion of hers was going to or having yard sales. She loved finding treasures that her family may need.
She will be missed immeasurably for her bright eyes, big smile and the love and kindness she showed all. Cherishing her legacy are son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Robin; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and David; Daughter-in-law, Lisa. Grandchildren, Renae; Roy; Marcus (Kristin); Rachel (Jonathan); Bradley (Molly); Bailee; Lindsey (Chance); Lauren (Jeremy).
