Betty was born September 1, 1935 to Irma and Emanuel Marks in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the youngest of five children. Betty was especially close to her mom who, despite the Great Depression, always managed to make her family feel loved, protected and wanting for nothing.
Betty graduated from high school in the Crescent City. She decided not to pursue additional schooling and instead moved to Texas to start a family, which she did with exceptional devotion and energy. She gave birth to eight children within 11 years, plus a baby boy David who died in childbirth.
Later in life, Betty married her best friend, Marshall, who lifted her up and served as the wind beneath her wings.
The lasting legacy of Mom/Mama/Mimi/Betty is her tireless commitment to her children and extended family; her extraordinary “Nawlins” hospitality to friends, family and even strangers; her devotion to God expressed through her Catholic faith; and her other-worldly famous culinary mastery in the kitchen.
Betty’s holiday dinners are truly unforgettable. Although she believed the Lord has prepared a heavenly banquet for each of us, the question remains: how can He resist letting her prepare the meal?
Betty is survived by her children, Paul Leech Jr. (Kim), Beth Gaspard (Craig), Greg Leech (Pearlas Sanborn), Darlene Leech (Mike Oddo), Kevin Leech, Mary Cope (Todd), Chris Leech (Pam Herman) and Suzanne Miller (Brian Brown); grandchildren, Rachel Sarabia, Jonathan Sarabia, Christian Guzman-Leech, Chrystel Ross, Bryan Deily, Winston Leech, Asia Leech, Lauren Oddo, Bethany Oddo, Jordan Oddo, Kristy Rose Leech, Ceire Leech, Noelle Cope, Madeline Cope-Wiens, Natalie Cope, Christian Leech, Kristopher Barton, Kellis Barton, and Hannah Miller; a growing list of beautiful great-grandchildren; stepson, Marshall McMahon, Jr.; and stepdaughter, Lisa Ervin.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Marshall McMahon; and stepdaughter, Dolores Sutton.
