Sara Margaret Garrett, a selfless mother, devoted sister, and loving grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025 in Temple, TX. She was born on July 2, 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee and became a long-time resident of Grand Prairie, TX in 1966. She is survived by her son David Garrett and his wife Alicia of San Antonio, grandson Paul Garrett and wife Ruby of Austin, and her sister Helen Jane Henslee of Grand Prairie, TX. She is preceded in death by parents Walter and Helen Fowlkes, partner David Martin, and grandson James Walter Garrett.
She was proud of her family and loved spending time with them, always available for listening to life’s dilemmas and able to give well-thought advice when asked. She was known to all who knew her as a “fighter” who could figure out any situation and overcome obstacles. She was raised in a remote area of Arkansas in the small town of McCrory where she graduated from McCroy High School in 1958 as the class valedictorian. She was even then recognized as special by her classmates being voted “the most likely to succeed.” She furthered her education by graduating magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting. She worked in a CPA firm in Arkadelphia, AR to put herself through school and upon completion of her degree began working for LTV Aircraft Product Group at its corporation division in Grand Prairie, TX. She retired from the company then owned by Northrop Grumman after 32 years of service, having reached the level of Director of Sector Cost Management and Compliance. She was very proud to have reached a high leadership role within a company that was crucial to the country’s air defense and manufactured such airplanes as the A-7 Corsair II, which saw service during the Vietnam War to reprisal raids against Libya during Operation El Dorado Canyon in 1986.
She loved accounting with a keen passion. After retirement she began volunteering for preparing taxes for underprivileged persons. She eagerly attended yearly classes to keep current in personal tax preparation, which was really where she first started her interest in accounting during her student days at Ouachita University and also for her husband’s family grocery stores in southern Missouri. She enjoyed extensive travel with her partner David Martin; together they visited most of the Presidential Libraries in the United States as well as extensive other historical sites. A compassionate person, she contributed often in her life to persons in need and to charities.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, TX, treasurer of the exclusive LTV Aircraft Products Group Management Association, and had been a member of the honorary educational fraternity Kappa Delta Pi.
A visitation for Sara will be held at Grand Prairie Funeral Home at 733 Dalworth Street, Grand Prairie, TX at 11:00 AM and funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM. A burial service will be at Moore Memorial Gardens & Parkdale Cemetery at 1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012.
