

Verlie Lee Kendrick Smith born August 7, 1923 passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on September 18, 2021. Verlie was affectionately known by her nursing friends as “Smitty” and lovingly called “Mimi” and “Gaga Mimi” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was born in Center Hill, Florida as the only daughter of six children to Robert Lee and Lillie Belle Kendrick. After high school she attended Orange General Hospital School of Nursing and received her Registered Nursing degree. She then met Glen R. Smith, a handsome Navy enlisted pilot in Orlando, Florida and he danced his way into her heart. They were later married in Dallas, Texas on September 28, 1947. Verlie and Glen settled in Grand Prairie, Texas to raise their 3 children Karen, Debbie and Rick. Verlie brought her love of nursing to Texas and continued her career at Dallas Methodist Hospital and Oak Cliff Medical & Surgical Clinic, until her retirement in 1986. Both Glen and Verlie were lifelong active members of the First Christian Church of Grand Prairie and were often referred to as the “Angels of the Church”.
Verlie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lillie Kendrick, her five brothers A.J., W.A., Wilburn, Woodrow, Stanley and her loving husband of 63 years, Glen Richard. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Karen McNeill, Debbie Gearhart and husband Terry, son Rick Smith and wife Tammy. Grandchildren Tami and husband Aaron Gray, Tiffany and husband Clay McNutt, Ross McNeill and wife Janet, Ryan McNeill and wife Christi, Melissa and husband Chris Wimmer and Bridgett Bateman, Todd Gearhart and Brent Smith.
Verlie had Thirteen Great-grandchildren Nora Kate and Tatum Gray, Mac and Elle McNutt, Collin and Leah McNeill, Zack McNeill and Allison McNeill Williams and husband Ethan, Julianna, Christian and Triniti Wimmer, Kaila and husband Taylor Middleton, Devin, Destiny, Delanie, Delian and CJ Bateman.
Also, Five Great-great grandchildren Ryleigh, Delilah, Romeo, Brynlee, and Nash. And by her many special nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 4, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Bean Massey Burge Funeral Home, 2951 S. Belt Line Road, Grand Prairie, Texas.
The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 5 at 10:30 AM in the Bean Massey Burge Chapel, followed by 1:15 PM burial at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
