Growing up, Scott was a typical kid who loved sports, friends, and spending time with family. He played baseball and was a wrestler in high school. However, his love for golf developed early and became a lifelong passion.
After graduating from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1979, Scott continued his education at Ferris State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Professional Golf Management.
While working as an assistant golf pro at the Blyfield Country Club, Scott would frequent a local restaurant called José Babushka's, where he noticed a pretty server named Kristy. Turning on his sense of humor and charm, she was easily endeared to his kindness and laughter. The two quickly became inseparable. The young couple were excited to build a life together and were married in Grand Rapids in 1989.
Devoted to his family, Scott left the golfing profession in the early 1990s for a more stable career in the family company. He worked for Wolverine Scrap Metal over many years, and moved up to management, serving as Vice President until the company was sold. Not ready to retire, Scott stayed on as general manager to facilitate the transition and continue overseeing the organization his father founded until his passing.
When he wasn’t working, Scott could be found on the golf course or at home watching sports with the people he loved. He was an avid Michigan State fan and cheered on all the Michigan pro teams, especially the Detroit Lions and Tigers. He enjoyed going out to eat with his wife and adult children, spending as much time together as possible.
Scott was the epitome of authenticity and kindness. He was a man who gave his whole heart to all who would accept it and remained ever the optimist. He had a gift for seeing every person for who they were and treated everyone with compassion and respect. To his closest friends and all his family, he showed his love by giving out nicknames and telling silly stories that would leave you crying with laughter. He will be remembered by all who loved him for his devotion to his family, playful sense of humor, profound kindness, and infectious joy for life.
Scott is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kristy; his children, Elise (Brian) Ngo, Derek Hosford, and Brent Hosford; his sisters, Susan and Kathy Hosford; his mother-in-law, Faye Deater; his sister-in-law, Jill (Ron) Krause; his brother-in-law, David (Brett Gerlach) Deater; his cat, Toby; and his grand-animals—Alfie and Sylvester the cats, and Winston and Phoebe the corgis—as well as many other relatives and friends.
Visitation for Scott will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel, where his funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. The family will also receive friends for one hour prior to the start of the funeral service. Luncheon will be served following the service. Private burial will be at Cascade Township Cemetery.
