David Lee Banning, age 75, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025 surrounded by his family. David was born in Grand Rapids on June 30, 1950 one of the six children of Robert & Fae (Shupe) Banning.
A lifelong resident of the area, Dave grew up attending the local schools. Soon after graduating from Ottawa Hills High School, he settled into his career at Dickinson Press. He would spend his working years as a printer for the publishing company.
On March 3, 1973, David was united in marriage to the love of his life, Yvonne. The couple would weather life’s ups and downs together for 52 years.
When Dave wasn’t working, he enjoyed golfing. His golfing foursome usually included his brother, Craig, and his friends Denny and Neal, and his son Mike would join them as well. The gift of an Xbox also allowed him to play golf year-round, and even after health issues forced him off the greens. He loved cars, especially fast ones, and back in his younger years was known for his driving skills at the drag races.
Most importantly, David loved spending time with his family. For many years, David and Yvonne would take their son Mike, camping at Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts Traverse City. Their favorite memories as a family stem from their years helping the owners take care of the grounds, dressing up as Yogi and Boo-Boo Bear and entertaining the other campers, and of course the endless amounts of laughter and jokes they played on each other.
Besides his beloved wife, Yvonne, David is survived by his son Michael (Tina) and his grandchildren Jacob and Makayla. He is also survived by his siblings: Craig Banning (Joy Peters), Terri (Bruce) Farrell, Kathy (Damon) Geuks, Kevin (Jamie) Banning, and Karen Darin; special cousins Doug and Mark Shupe, Best friends Vern Holtzlander and Barb & Lance Smith as well as many other relatives. Besides his parents, David was preceded in death by his infant son Scott Robert.
In honoring Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there are no formal services scheduled.
David will always be remembered by his famous quote “I love you all! Stay Safe and Be Well”.
