

Doris Lucile Winters, age 93, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 4, 2018.She was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 22, 1924, to Paul Gustaf and Hildegarde Gladys (Johnson) Peterson. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Gotfred and Anna Lisa (Larsdotter) Johnson; brother Lambert Peterson; her first husband Arthur Franklin Thompson; her loving husband of 49 years Robert Earl Winters and son Robert John Winters. She is survived by her two sons, Dale (Joyce) Winters of Grand Rapids and Gregory (Karen) Winters of Branson, Missouri; two daughters Anne (David) Terrell, and Barbara Winters Orlebeke; daughter-in-law Dr. Cherie Crum Winters; brother Orville R. Peterson, all from Grand Rapids, MI; sister-in-law, and brother-in-law Wilma and Randy Winters of Searcy, Arkansas; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. As a young girl, Doris rode a wagon through deep snow to go to school in a one room school house in Minnesota. She graduated in 1942 from Central High School, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Doris was a retired Registered Nurse from Gerber Products Company. In 1947, she married Arthur Thompson in Harrisburg Illinois and they had two sons, Dale Arthur and Gregory Alan Thompson. Then in 1958, she married the love of her life, Robert E. Winters and together with his children and her two sons they raised their loving family. Doris loved to quilt, square dance and attend theater plays. She was a tutor in the Harlingen, TX school district where she and Bob lived for many years. They loved to travel and their favorite trip was to Alaska. Doris had a beautiful voice and loved to sing with her choir at church. She was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan. A memorial service to celebrate Doris' life will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 11:00 am at St Luke’s Lutheran Church (3215 4 Mile Rd NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525) with a visitation to be held one hour prior to the service, at 10:00 am. Officiating this service will be Pastor David Blank. Memorial contributions can be made in Doris’ name to St Luke’s Lutheran Church (3215 4 Mile Rd NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525) or Faith Hospice (2100 Raybrook Ave SE # 300, Grand Rapids, MI 49546).
